I  understand  only  too  well  the  agonies  that  follow  the  loss  of  a  close  friend / relative, MillieH

Very  good  friends  have  just  lost  a  niece.  She  has  been  fighting  "C"  for  four  years  and  was  living,  if  it  can  be  called  that,  at  home  just  before  Christmas.  Her  cousin  &  his  wife,  a  senior  Sister  at  Leighton  I  think,  visited  her  and  after  about  10  mins  the  nurse  was  on  the  Christies  Help  Line  -- she  had  been  getting  treatment there from  time to time.  They  asked  just  one  question,  Have  you  got  a  car  --  we  have  a  bed  !!

After  several  procedures  they  ceased  treatment  &  I  believe  moved  her  into  St  Lukes ( Cheshire )  Hospice  for  E O L care.  Sadly  she  passed  on  on  Sunday.  As  a  result  of  all  this  I  got  a  couple  of  texts  &  three  soggy  phone calls  from  my  friends  wife -- just  needing  someone  quiet  to talk  to.  As  WN  has  already  said,  if  all  we  can  offer  is   a  listening  ear,  well  it  helps.

You have a big heart muscles, a big heart & a giving nature. We all put in & take out of the kitty of life, you’ve put in greatly. That ‘listening ear’ will have impacted beyond all you expect. I was you around 4yrs ago, I did the same by offering a shoulder & support. Recently(last year) I was thanked deeply. It took that long for the person to get over their loss. It was not expected but was a soulful & lifting experience for me. As we journey thru life my friend some go fast ignoring everyone, some(like you) make a point of stopping & helping others. The boy done good, real good👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻

Thanks ABM and WN.  As you say we can only be here when needed.  DIL was very tearful yesterday afternoon but we then fetched the grandsons from school with her and we took them all to a local garden centre for tea/coffee and cake and she cheered up a bit.  I think she is suffering from shock as well as grief.

Life is so unpredictable Millie but you know you're in our thoughts.

On an average day level. Just had a call for OH to collect visiting dog.

I am listening to a repeat of Desert Island Discs with Cumbrian, James Rebanks, I remember Goldie recommending "The Shepherd's Life" on here.

We've been listening to it in stages - while having tea and cake before milking. A remarkable man. Last year our son bought our grandson 6 Herdwicks off him, and all winter one of his tups has been "holidaying" here with his harem. They are hopefully going to lamb during the Easter school holidays.

A bad time for your family Millie, and of course that poor friends family. Caring folks on here will be thinking of you all, and others of course.

Goldie, I had wondered what had happened to the sheep, hope all goes well when the new lambs appear. smile

I had a touch of cabin fever this morning so OH took me down to West Bay near Bridport. The sun was out, no wind and it was a lovely morning with a calm sea. I took a photo of the inner harbour with Golden Cap in the background and also a large boat shaped picnic bench which I thought was a nice design and had a ramp access for anyone to use.

Been rather rash today, I signed up for Vodafone's Gigafast broadband. I am only taking the lower offering of 100 mpbs direct to house fibre connection with the option to increase to 900 mbps at a later date. I am going to keep my Plusnet contract for a while long so I can compare the two.

Amazing, space age technology whilst I was awoken by the dulcet tones of the scrap iron chap crying ‘any ole iron’. Continuing to decorate spare bedroom where the new guest bed will go.

Will have the grandtwins tomorrow whilst daughter and SIL continue with the internals of the house.  The extension was totally waterproof just after Christmas and they have taken down 2 walls and built 1 new wall. Apart from the installation of the beams and a little brickwork they have done all the work themselves.

Not sure this us type right time to mention this embarassed.

Reviewed our wills this afternoon. Apparently ours were made in 2006, its recommended you review every 3 to 5 years, we haven't ever! The solicitors we made the wills with closed in 2009/2010 and our wills and deeds were taken over by another firm, now international 😯. They did offer a couple of times a free review but we didn't take up the offer, today we did, and somehow we knew it would cost!

Well it doesn't have to, lovely young lady, well you would be charming if your rate is £155 per hour + VAT 😱😱. Although the will review was free so no quibble there, an hour discussing our sort of will pros and cons along with 3 other types, my head hurts lots. We both think that we do need to have a different sort, Lifetime Interest rather than our existing mutual ones, as these mean no changes whatsoever can be made in the demise of the first of us, still both think that's fine. Consideration to IHT too - that's property prices around here ridiculous!!, (hence we discovered hourly rate) and care fees. My head really hurts and OH's saying I knew it would cost 😢😢. Also we really should do both sorts of Lasting Power of Attorney so basically bye bye a few thousand pounds 😢😢😢.

Still time to consider it all over next few days. If I knew we weren't going to require care or need help mentally, physically or with finances, anyone got a crystal ball?, we'd leave very well alone! The actual contents of the wills remain unchanged as regards beneficiaries as it was so well worded in 2006 so expense is to get extra IHT as the rules have changed. They could change back or again who can say??

Wherenext glad you made it, hope you dont have to wait too long for such a delightful test!

Tammygirl have you gone yet? 😉 Have a great time.

David Klyne I'm delighted to say we get those speeds with Virgin.

Brue glad you got out and about for a bit.

Milliehull and all those of us who've been a support as well as lost folks thinking of you. We are never given more than we can carry - although at times I think its pushing us further than we'd like. Rocky2buckets, lovely words there.

Feeling lazy, but not bothered, by all the DIY going on. I remember what a great idea it all seems whilst sitting comfortably - then comes the choosing, buying and doing. Time for more contemplation 😂😂😂 Oneputt will we know the surprise guest for whom your working on decorating for?

Milliehull did you ever say who you DIL made the royal wedding that for? If you did I missed it or forgot it embarassed. Last thing to sort for my outfit. Oh perhaps I prefer DIY 😂😂😂

Ps edit forgot to say OH crown fell out this morning, will it never end????

We’re getting dolled up tonight for a Burns Night Supper at our favourite restaurant. No kilts but OH will be wearing a tartan waistcoat in honour of his Great Great Great Great Grandfather. The long held story by the family is that he was a Jacobite who marched south for Bonnie Prince Charlie (from Glen Orchy) in 1745. After the retreat at Derby he separated from the others and sought refuge in the Forest of Bowland. He later settled as a farmer at Slaidburn and is buried there.

The paucity of evidence has never stopped us believing the story.

    Up the rebels!

What ever system you have it is only as good as the nearest BT box as it all at some time uses BT and Plus net is a BT company

We have just taken up an 18month offer from Sky and as everyone is wanting fibre internet it is faster than BT fibre was, even though it is via copper, and £18 PER month Inc anytime calls

    JVB

As I understand it this system is totally independent of BT home broadband system. It's run by Fibre City that has its own extensive network in MK. Where we live we can only get FTTC which means we are limited to about 38 mbps over the normal phone lines from the cabinet. I know that BT are working on solutions to improve the speeds even further and some houses in MK have access to FTTP but not at the high speeds offered by Vodafone currently. Virgin achieved higher speeds by using a different system which was basically a co-ax version but I don't think they reach anywhere near 900 mbps?

The interesting thing about Virgin and Milton Keynes is that they used to run the old analogue TV cable system in MK. The trouble was that all the ducting that their cables ran through were owned by BT and carried all the telephone lines. It would have been so easy for Virgin to have introduced high speed internet to every home in MK years before Open Reach managed it. I think there was a lot of politics preventing the sensible option!!!

We are looking forward to longer days, can’t arrive fast enough in this household.

DIY day today. We have completed something that has been an issue for a long time, and have managed to do it better than we hoped to do. Old houses need time spending on them, and sometimes some of the tasks can look very daunting, but this time we succeeded. It has spurred us on to tackle a few more tasks. We might even get started on our huge attic. It’s been on hold for a couple of years due to ill health and my caring duties, full of all sorts of stuff that needs sorting out, and OH has been using it as a bike building cave, but it would make a great extra bedroom, or a workshop/ craft space.

I never tire of posting this - our speed. It's on a hi-spec Desktop connected via Ethernet to the router - wireless or older devices, and thick stone walls,  achieve less.

It's the upload that is really amazing - photos whizz up to the cloud in a blink of an eye.

    Thank you B4RN!

    Goldie

Its somewhat ironic that where you live (relatively so) in the middle of nowhere and get that sort of speed and someone in an urban area will be exceptionally luck to get a tenth of your speed. It looks good value as well although I suspect the installation costs might be higher depending on how many people "club together" to get the system into their area. Here in MK if I went for the max speed of 900 mbps it would cost me £48 a month, this includes phone line and no line rental required. The installation and equipment is free if signed up for by a certain date. One telling thing about you picture is the ping rate of 1ms which is impressive. Even with fibre broadband that can vary a great deal and just shows how superior direct to premises fibre broadband is.
