The A9/A61 is easy doable with a 7m 'van. The only "steepish" bit is about a 2 mile run up to Le Perthus on the border with France, but it's definitely not a problem, and best to try and stay in the middle lane, in order to avoid getting hemmed in behind slow moving vehicles.

Sorry, can't help you with Camping Les Violettes.

One review on UK Campsites (dated July 2018) as follows:

Relatively small (58 pitch, all year round) site with new sanitary facilities (2018) and refurbished pool area.

Looks like owners are generally upgrading the site with roads being freshly surfaced while we were there. Friendly helpful staff. WiFi is decent at €15 per week. You can cycle or walk the lovely Canal du Midi in both directions, accessible by a quiet road just a couple of hundred metres along the main road at the site entrance. Toulouse is an easy cycle on the canal bank. Restaurant too but we didn’t use it.

Pitches are generous with shade but could be muddy after wet weather. ACSI €15 pn away from high season with 7 nights for price of 6. Intermarché supermarket and Lidl nearby.

Rufs, are you staying at Camping Salata? We were there a few years ago and will probably be there next year but I heard that they've put a lot of Cabins in. If you are there/were there can you give a heads up on your thoughts of it please.

ps the drive to Toulouse is easily doable.

We stayed at Les Viollettes April 2018. Site was wet but they had a very wet spring. New toilet block is fine. Canal du Midi close by great for dog walking. Toulouse is also well worth a visit.

thank you all for info much appreciated...Wn..have not looked at camping Salata, we are planning to stay at camping La Gaviota which was recommended by BB i think, but this will not be until May/Jun on our return from Mazarron, but if in that area will do a recci, notice it is not dog friendly from end of june thru aug.

A9 / A61 is decent and all motorway - if the roads you state are correct.

Our preferred winter route towing down to coastal route of Med Spain from Calais via Toulouse. Done the run both ways and again in 7 days time southbound.

As said a bit of a long climb at the border area and can be windy at the top but all steady going and nothing too dramatic.

We often use Camping Montreal south of Limoges - decent easy stop close to E20 / A9.

We stayed at Camping Les Violettes last September, wasn't that full but a few long term vans/MH's obviously for either retirees or some workers who were bussed into Toulouse in the morning.

The new facilities are fine, and the Canal du Midi is very close by for either walking or cycling into Toulouse, we did that and parked the bikes in an underground car park in the centre of the city, safe and convenient

Don't park in front of the restaurant when you check in, we were told off by the tattooed waitress and then by the manager or owner, who didn't like my excuse that there was nowhere else to go to!

We have done the A9 lots of times in both caravan and MH and on three occasions whilst going South shortly after turning right at Orange   met with the high winds coming off the Cevennes, North to South cross wind.    On each occasion I was forced to drop my speed to around 30 mph for 25/30 miles and even that was rough going.

We stayed at Camping Salata in Roses late late September just gone and we’re lucky to get in, it’s always quite full and very popular.   But a very nice site and great location.

tks, your not the first to mention the strong wind problems, guess not a lot can be done except drop your speed as suggested. Have put Salata on our list, will be there early May so do not envisage a problem
