Recommendations around Limoges area please
Hi,
Traveling with the caravan down toward Limoges in early/mid May. Stopping over at St Nazaire then La Rochelle for a week and would like to spend a week around Limoges (ish). From there heading up to Le Mans before Roscoff and the ferry home. 2 Adults both in our 60's no children with us. Would welcome recommendations for the Limoges part of the trip. Sightseeing rather than sporting. Many thanks. John

A place near to Limoges that is interesting but shocking is Orodour sur Glane- a village that suffered atrocities at the hands of the Nazis. After the war it was decided to retain the village as it was, as a memorial to those who died there. I think we stayed at a campsite near St. Junien but it was many years ago so I can't be sure. Nearer the coast in Poitou Charentes there are attractive towns like Saintes and Angouleme and also Cognac (many brandy houses to visit!) Have a good time.

We also visited Oradour sur Glane, we stayed at the municipal site at Brice sur Vienne very basic but ok for a couple of nights.
We have also stayed at the Municipal site in Limoges decent site mixture of hard stand and grass, closes for lunch opens again at 14.30.

We stayed the once at Chateau Leychoisier - just for two nights to visit the city. It was a very rural, rather remote grassland site, with rather basic facilities, in the grounds of a private Chateau, with a gloomy lake down through the woodland. I am surprised to read that it now claims to be a five star site in the Castels chain - it might have improved a lot to reach that standard, though some of the reviews indicate otherwise. A full week there would be too much for me. Don't book, go and look.

We stay at chateau Leychoisiez every year on our way to the Dordogne region. It looks like a fairy tale castle - very beautiful. The staff are lovely & it’s very near to the motorway (A20), which is why we use it. The pitches are big, not very flat & there’s a nice little pool. The loo facilities are very clean, but very old & basic. We love to stay there, but wouldn’t stay longer than 2-3 nights. Oradour sur Glane is a must for a visit & it’s very near. If you were to stay there, don’t pay the extra for a serviced pitch. It’s a pitch where the water & drain is for everyone’s use. Yes, the tap is on your pitch, but everyone uses it & the pitch can become very wet.

This site is about 30 miles from Limoges http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_chateau_le_verdoyer.html We used it as a base for visiting Oradour sur Glane. If Limoges is your main point of interest then this site is in the town http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_d_Uzurat.html The guy on reception is exceptionally helpful with information. There is a bus stop within walking distance of the site.

In 2018 we stayed at this site on returning from the south of France, ACSI prices, run and owned by an English couple.
Not to be confused with another of the same name, this site is situated about 12 miles south of Limoges, we also visited Oradour sur Glane whilst there. Very sad and little known massacre that occurred in this village.
The site has a heated pool, excellent restaurant (always open and frequented by the locals), spacious pitches and good sanitary block. It was here on the site that our caravan charging unit packed up and the owner couldn't have been more helpful in making sure we had everything we needed as well as charging our battery until the new charging unit arrived from the UK.

If you decide on this site...you may wish to join the loyalty card (free) that Yelloh offer. On site stays back end of 2017 and a couple in 2018...I have 6 nights free for 2019 at any of the Yelloh sites on a 3* pitch...9 nights on a 2* pitch...worth a look...

For motorhomers visiting Oradour sur Glane the Aire in the village is very quiet. There’s also a car park with day parking suitable for large motorhomes opposite the museum entrance.

We have stayed at Leychoisier. I thought it was an ACSI site? Some years since we were there but we enjoyed it and there were carp in the lake at the bottom; they must be massive now!
Some nice lakes in the area but too isolated for us now we have a motorhome.

We stayed two nights at Camping de le Glane on the outskirts (within walking distance) of very agreeable town centre of Saint-Junien. It was about four years ago and there was just one other pitch occupied at the end of May. Excellent site with big pitches and modest fees and helpful lady in reception as I recall. Short distance to Oradour sur Glane. Surrounding countryside most pleasant.

Thank you to everyone for the suggestions. I have the map and the ACSI app out and am trying to place all of your ideas. We may only stay 3 days now and take a little longer getting back up to Roscoff but that seems to fit in with the general suggestions around time spent in this area. Many thanks again.
