Gunshots and bird scarers - anywhere to avoid?

Just a bit of background to my question. We have just rejoined the caravan club after 6 years of having a static. We have had to get rid of the static because our dog is agoraphobic due to shooting where we live. A clay pigeon shooting place opened up a mile away from the site that the static was on, and every weekend was blighted by gunshot noise so we have had to sell it. And a bird scarer would start up at 7am most mornings and there is just no avoiding that sound in a caravan!

We have been working with a dog behaviourist for 3 years to try and get him over his fear, but I dont think its ever going to happen.

So we have bought a motorhome, because we think that if we turn up somewhere and there is shooting we can just move on.

So my question is, can anyone think of any sites we would need to avoid that anyone might have noticed any persistent background noise - ie shooting or bird scarers. Its hard to find anywhere these days without one or the other going on. In particular we want to go to Chirk this weekend but because of where it is, I am worried about there being shooting there.

Any information about any sites would be very welcome :) Anywhere in the country as we are planning on using the motorhome a lot!

Any to avoid, or any that you have been to and they have stood out as being particularly peaceful with no background noise?

Thanks.

Been to Chirk many times and never heard any 'gun fire' type noises.

Likewise. Title only and 2 replies. Is this a new poster or yet another system fault? If new poster once its passed for publication I'd assume it would all be visible 😂

Taking a clue from JWJ I cannot see why bird scarers would be a common feature at Chirk

It’ll be another delay in approving a newbie’s post. Meanwhile, the replies appear. Madness!

I can’t think bird scaring at Chirk will be likely but at sites near farmland it’ll be unpredictable depending on crops and time of year. It could be OK in, say, April but not in June.

Works on my iPad, can see OP.😀

Some folk have commented on the factory noise, although it didn't bother us. However, no gunshots or bird scarers when we were at Chirk.

Trouble is those types of noises are often seasonal.

Troutbeck Head (Cumbria) has an activity center next door, as in right adjacent to it along one fence, and they may do clay pigeon shooting.

OP, following JWJ post seems to be about Chirk.

Rarely come across bird scarers and probably one every 40 sites at most of varies suppliers

The OP was pending approval but, due to the fact that his trip was this weekend, I requested it be approved without delay, hence it was not visible initially but now is.

Just remembered that there was a comment in the vistor's book about loud noises and bird scarers at Bridlington from the fields next to it

I have heard bird scarers on occasion at Malvern. It’s not a regular thing though.

Others have commented about it at Marazion although I’ve never heard it there myself.

Thanks so much for your replies everyone. Yes I'm new here as we have just rejoined after 6 years of having a static. Any information is really valuable to us, as it really helps us decide where we can go. Our dog is nervous when we get to a new place, but his confidence grows if we go somewhere and it's quiet outside. a few gunshots and that is our break ruined really. We will try Chirk this weekend then!

I would have thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the site reviews of any sites you are thinking of visiting. Noise nuisance of any kind is usually reported, often above other things! Obviously no guarantee that there won't be noise even if not reported in reviews but if the noise is a regular problem it will almost certainly appear. My Sister in Law had a dog that reacted very badly to noise, traffic, fireworks and despite help from a professional never did get over the problem.

As most bird scarers operate in the country maybe stick to town and cities?

I can understand the OP's stance. In his old age, our dog became stressed by travelling so we adapted accordingly.

I'm of the mind that says if you take on a dog, you should do your best to do what’s right for it. I call it part of being a responsible owner.

If you call wanting to make a little rescue dog who had a very bad start to life happy , while trying to enjoy ourselves too, then yes we are totally dominated by him :)

We are going to start trying to find more in town centres and cities. Can't wait to try the York site. There was a really good thread I found on here a couple of days ago listing sites in towns. Such a shame as we love the countryside. Sadly in our town we cannot get away from the shooting noise even though we are not exactly rural. It is always there in the background most days.

The trouble is that, while being a feature of rural life, it’s not a constant factor. All could be quiet this week but completely different next week and that applies to any site.

I agree, it just crossed my mind that the on site wardens should have information that is more accurate and up to date than people on here.

Most bird scarers occur in areas where Agriculture is prominent. Hence avoid places such as East Anglia or Lincolnshire which is predominently full of produce growers. Not many bird scarers in Cattle and Sheep areas. Why would you want to scare birds there?

Never heard one at Chirk. Thinking back to last year we didn't hear any af Cheddar, Bristol, Buxton, Knaresborough or Wirral CP. Rest of time spent on CLs in the country where we heard them in Norfolk.

There's a big pheasant/partridge shoot around the Bourton on the Water site. Clay pigeon shoots around there too. We've been some weekends and it's very noisy. Although this site is not open during the winter so would miss most of the game season.
