Murol or Mont Dore
Hi Everyone
We are looking at stopping for a week or more in the Auvergne this summer, specifically in the Murol/Mont Dore areas. There will be just two of us and we enjoy walking, cycling and swimming (though we can survive without a pool).
Can anyone give feedback on the campsites in the area please?

You might like Camping les Bombes - close to Murol - a three star mid range site and offers ACSI discounts- although there are grander campsites on the lake itself and simpler sites up in the hills, according to your taste.

Thanks for that suggestion. Have you been there in the summer at all? I did look at that and thought it looked interested but reviews mentioned waterlogged pitches and with a motorhome that would be a nightmare?

Yes we went in summer but not recently - the weather was fine that year and we wouldn't have gone otherwise, but mountain weather is always unpredictable.
The site looks to have been upgraded a lot since we were there and may have Motorhome pitches these days - many sites do, so perhaps an e mail to them to ask. But if not on the site there will be a hard standing Motorhome Aire nearby - there always is in France these days.

We haven't actually stayed at any site near Murol but when we were at Murat, south of where you hope to go, we got talking to a British couple who had just left the site Le Pre Bas at Murol and recommended it us if we were heading that way. Unfortunately we weren't but have kept it in the back of our minds.
Have to say we enjoyed the Auvergne but we were not blessed with the best of weather. Still managed to do lots of walking though. Lovely area if you get good weather.

Beautiful situation with great views, clean and well maintained facilities. No pool or other fripperies but a small shop with a bread depot etc. We liked it a lot despite the fact that a sudden mountain storm wrecked our caravanstore when we were out for lunch!
The cable car to Mont du Sancy was spectacular, and an excellent lunch was to be had at the hotel near the base station.
The whole area was lovely with many excellent walks and drives. We were fortunate to be there for a fiery festival in le Mont Doré (24th June).
How do I rotate the image??

Thank you Wherenext. We had looked at Le Pre-Bas, our only reservation being the very strong holiday park image they project. Though since we wouldn’t be on site much of the day, this would possibly pass us by. Pitches and sanitaires look excellent.
The weather is bugging us a little. We often stay in the Alps or Pyrenees and are used to storms or overcast days but the thought of rain most days isn’t great when cycling up hills

At Mont Dore one finds the confluence of two streams, the Dor and the Dogne, which then flow down through the town as the 'Dordogne'. BTW it's the festival of St Jean.

Very interesting reading this post as a area we would like to go again last time in a cottage but would rather go with our caravan the views look amazing so have saved the camping site mentioned so will have to think when we will go as we have a few areas to think about for this year. Thank you iansoady.

It's a bit far to walk, so we used the car. There's a fairly steep hill out of le Mont Doré which I didn't fancy after a meal! It's probably a couple of miles. There is a small rustic restaurant a short walk from the site specialising in local delicacies (which to be honest we weren't too keen on) but it's only open at lunchtime if I remember correctly. I don't think there is a bus service although there will be local taxis which shouldn't cost too much (I see you're in a motor home).
Access to the site pulling a caravan is a bit tight as the road up from the town is narrow and bendy as well as being quite steep, and to get to it you have to drive through a fairly awkward bit of the town itself. But we managed OK pulling a 7.3 metre shipping length van.
We were lucky enough to get a pitch right at the top of the site -- this is the view.....
