Hi,

This is our first time to post a question on Club Together, although have looked at discussions before.

We are looking for any recommendations for campsites for Lake Maggiore.

We have a motorhome and would like to have access to good public transport nearby.

Can anyone make any recommendation / suggestions?

Thanks

We stayed at Valle Romantic in 2017.

Look at page 2/3 of this link where we picked up some suggestions on Lake Maggiore sites.

    Lovely lake

Valle Romantica is a lovely site, about one mile from the centre of Cannobio. If you want to be more central then it’s sister site, Riviera, is right on the lake close to the centre of Cannobio. You have acces to the ferries and a local bus service (infrequent) which runs up to Locarno or down to Verbania and beyond.

Maggiore is stunning with much to do but public transport is not brilliant. If you want to use the ferries a lot then Verbania is probably a better location but Cannobio is more attractive with better sites.

Conca D’Ora is an excellent (ACSI) site on the lake but not close to any towns or transport.

None of the Italian lakes has good public transport and ferry services have been cut down over the years. Your best bet is to be near a good ferry point, just like the locals.

Conca D’Ora is an excellent (ACSI) site on the lake but not close to any towns or transport.

Agree that it is not so near to the main attractions but the pretty village of Feriolo is short walk away and even has a small general store, or did when we were last there. When we stayed we did have the car and would probably look for a site nearer to the main towns with the motorhome.

We've stayed twice at Riviera,  its a bit cramped with narrow roads but has a great atmosphere, we loved it!  Last time we chose a pitch with its own facilities which was very convenient.  Romantica sounds better if you don't mind the walk to the village.  We have also stayed at camping Parisi in Baveno, a small site near to ferries for the islands and at the site next door to Conca D'Ora (can't remember the name) near Feriolo which although small has nice restaurants and a market at which we spent a small fortune on cheese, olives etc.  Can't comment on public transport other than the ferries for which you can get an up to date timetable when you're there. We spent a fair amount of time working out how/when to get where we wanted, but found the boat staff very helpful.

The ferry timetable is excellent and available in English/Italian BUT you need to read it very carefully, especially the notes. For example, services change on Luino market day etc. It’s also worth mentioning that the Cannobio sites are quite expensive, 35 Euros approx per night.

Hi, can agree that Valle Romantica is a lovely site, we have stayed there three times, but we are banners so have the car for transport.

As said ferries are a great way to get around but can be expensive and a bit hit and miss timing wise.

On our first visit in 1990 we parked at Riviera to launch our kayak and a gentleman offered to help me which I gladly accepted. On our return he again helped and the told me that he was German  and the book he was reading to improve his English was the dog eared copy of Animal Farm that he was holding!

Thanks very much for all the replies. We had read about the Valle Romantica site from a site report in MMM, Jan 18, p80, so it was nice to hear about other peoples recommendations and impressions and also find out about its sister site Riviera, especially as we like small sites with good atmosphere. We are looking to stay on one of these as part of a two site stay on and around Maggiore this coming summer.

    Thanks again!

Just to update, having looked on website for the Valle Romantica and Valle Riviera with view to booking a site for summer 2019, only to find they have minimum stay requirements of 10 and 14 nights respectively for high season. Unfortunately this is outside the time we had set aside for Maggiore on our tour this year so will have to find alternatives.

We have never booked sites in Italy but I guess that if you are going in high season then it might be a problem, although when we travelled in July and August we didn’t book. They speak very good English at both Romantica and Riviera so you could always phone and ask whether booking is essential. If in doubt the golden rule is to turn up early, perhaps even befor lunch. These are touring sites.

The Italian annual holidays start in the first week of August and for most of that month hence most sites in the area will be very busy and full for much of the time.  If you can avoid these dates  I’m sure you will get a pitch with a motorhome especially if you arrive early even in late July. The prime pitches will be pre-booked well in advance but there are always lots of regular arrivals and departures at both the above sites.
