Suggestion please for the best sit to visit London if travelling from Up North Via the A1 /M1.Good access to train / bus service is required and don't really fancy going south of the river Thames.

Henlow Bridge Lakes should suit you. 5 minute walk to East Coast main line railway station and if you like fishing you will have a bonus.

Are you thinking of now or next year? Commons Wood at Welwyn might be an option. Bus service from near the site to the station, same line as above I think? If you are a member of the C&CC perhaps consider their Milton Keynes site, very easy access from junction 14 on the M1. Cheap taxi to the station or shortish walk to the bus. Very regular services to Euston. Don't think the site is open over winter.

The trip would be next year. The site at Henlow looks a bit far out ? Not a C&CC member but that's not a problem but don't fancy a bus or taxi to get to station. Sorry for being a bit picky 😄

Perhaps drive around M25 anti clockwise from bottom of M1 to reach Wyatts Covert site at Denham. Train station is walkable downhill in a morning but tiresome uphill at night. Being lazy we asked the warden which tube station car park we should drive to and he gave us a list of options.

If after April next year when toilets finished Commons Wood has buses to the town centre of WGC for railway station (next door) or Hatfield railway station both the same buses but Hatfield may be cheaper fare to London KX as it is one stop nearer ,if you want a late night in London it will mean a Taxi as the full bus service finishes about 20 00hrs it is about 10mins to either station from just near the site(bus passes after 0930 for non locals i think)

Denham if you don't fancy Abbey Wood. It's a short drive to the tube(don't go to Uxbridge) but park at Hillingdon or Ickenham. If yohu don't want to drive then the main line station at Denham has good connection and is fairly quick.

Site is easy to find coming from the north.

We all have our own way of doing things, being a motorhomer I always look for the easy optionswink

May I suggest the rather than distance you think about journey time. Even from Chrystal Palace on the bus it can take nearly an hour I think. Whereas from a mainline railway stay, for example Welwyn or MK it might only take half an hour on the train. Not sure about Henlow as it might only be a local service?

Neither am I but it should be easy enough to check. If I remember correctly the station is Arlesey into Kings Cross? At least Henlow is just off the A1.

What about Lee Valley Caravan site, at Edmonton, London N9 - easy access into London, and easy access coming from the north if you use the A1/A14/M11 and then the N106 west, or further north take the A10.  We live in Yorkshire, and our son lives in Hackney, just off the A10, so we almost pass the Lee Valley site when going to stay with him.  Staying there gives you discounted access to the range of other activities available on site.  Ponders End station is a walk away and there are plenty of buses.

+1 for Lee Valley. Stayed there many times. Not the prettiest site, but is usually well maintained and secure. Lots or workers use the site (me included) but is well run. Has cinema and sports centre at entrance road, and sometimes a restaurant. Walks along canal. Golf course on site. Frequent bus service from the cinema/sport centre to station for rail/tube into town.

Thanks for all the replies thus far, plenty of options for us to check out. Wyatts Covert and Lee Valley are looking the favourites at the moment. Pete

Visit London infrequently, probably only been three time in my entire life. Considering a visit this year, are there any CLs within walking distance of stations on the tube network?

Aldborough Hall Farm is an excellent site for visiting London. Nearest tube station about 25 mins walk from the CL. I last stayed in 2015.

We like Abbey Wood, not far from the Dartford crossing.  It is South of the Thames, but not by much.  Only about 10 mins walk to trains, with Abbey Cafe well recommended for a breakfast on the way !

Agree with Abbey Wood. We usually drive upto Greenwich, park up and  catch a river bus upto Westminster or Tower Bridge and we have walked to Canary Wharfe from Greenwich. Greenwich itself is well worth a day exploring the market, park, famous timeline and maritime museum. Abbey Wood itself is a very nice site and easy to get to from M25.

I must add to the Abbey Wood supporters. I was trying to figure out why it had barely had a mention until near the end of the posts. True it is fiddly to reach, especially from the North, but it is surely the best site for access to London. Such an easy walk to the station and very regular trains into London. I went just over a year ago and it is true the Crossrail works made things a bit chaotic but maybe they are finished now.

Unless you have an Oyster card it's a good idea to register a debit card with TFL. It makes transit around the tube, buses and overground so easy.

Abbey Wood is a lovely site too in my view (except in Autumn be prepared for noisy leaf blowers).

Abbey Wood is much the best option in my view and I speak as one who has tried Denham and Commons Wood. Denham is OK but it is a painful walk home up the hill. Commons Wood is a bit too far from the station for my liking.

We've only stayed at Abbey Wood once and weren't on site much during the day anyway ... I couldn't work out if the barbed wire topped fence was keeping us in or 'them' out 😉
