Car Ferry in Croatia
We are going to Croatia next year, and traveling down to Dubrodvic, with our caravan, there is a border that is Bosnia, and it's hard to get car insurance for this stretch,17 miles long.
The other option is a car ferry going from Ploce to Trpanj, but no one seems to know about it,it seems to take cars, lorries and motor homes.Has anyone been on this ferry.

Can't help directly , but look - people put photos of that ferry on You tube. It's a perfectly usable ship and the on-line price list will give you costs for car and caravan.

Thanks for your replies, yes have looked at the price list, says length of trailer, also weight, have sent an email to the operators, sent me some info, but still hard to understand, don't know wether to just turn up,for it looks a big ferry,my overall length is 13 mts,may have to wait until they have room for me,don't fancy running thru Bosnia with no insurance, but everyone I have spoke to on another forum, say they do it.

You might find www.dubrovnik-online.net helpful.
No advance ferry bookings - just turn up and queue. There are 6 or 7 ferries per day and the journey takes one hour. Good luck.

I’m not suggesting you break the law or insurance rules, but we towed down there this year and went straight through. It was a very easy, one roundabout, one set of traffic lights and and about 7 miles in total, road trip. We took the chance!
Have fun!

We are insured through The Camping and Caravanning Club. About 3 years ago it cost us just over £30 for the basic cover to travel through Bosnia in our camper van. The insurance was for a month but we only travelled through the 10km or so on the way to Dubrovnik and back a few days later. The cost was about the same as a one way journey on the ferry.
I agree with Olivegrower about the ease of travelling this section of Bosnia but I cannot understand why anyone takes "the chance" of travelling without basic insurance. OK they got away with it but can you imagine the complications of an accident in an uninsured vehicle and the potential costs involved? The thought of uninsured drivers in any country horrifies me including the possibility that they could cripple someone for life without any recompense to the injured person.

Although many UK motorinsurance policies will not include cover to pass through Bosnia, earlier forum posts have suggested that the AA and NFU are ones which may be able to arrange that insurance cover.

We did both options (ferry and road) in Oct 2018. We drove going south and came back on the ferry as we wanted to see some of the peninsula. Driving down was no problem at all. It took maybe 20 mins on an excellent road once we were thru the border. Nothing road or traffic wise concerned us so I'd be inclined to "take the risk". Coming back on the ferry was easy. About a 1 hour trip. Big boat so no concerns about not getting on. Don't try to book as they take the order from the queue, not from pre-books. The ferry company web site has all the prices. We also visited the Kotor region in Montenegro which is well worth a visit and Montenegro is very well priced, relative to Croatia. Camping Kate near Dubrovnik is very good. Cheers, Colin

Thank you all for your replies,
I have had a look on u tube and saw a caravan boarding the ferry,so that's good.I have thought about going through the border,CClub says they have no agents for any breakdown in Bosnia, but will pay for any problems,I.e. Recovery you pay they will re emburse when you get home,NFU will only cover 3rd party and you have to buy their car insurance.

Hello nicobromb. We drove down to Dubrovnik this summer in our 6.4m motorhome and took the ferry from Ploce to Trpanj. It was a matter of turn up and get a ticket from the quayside office and wait for the next available departure. While tickets can be pre-bought you still need to queue as spaces are first come first served so little point. The ferries are a reasonable size (similar to the Isle of Wight) with trucks and coaches accommodated. We enjoyed the 'detour' and took the opportunity to stay at Camping Lavender near Orebic. From there we took a foot passenger boat trip to Korcula town before continuing our road trip to Dubrovnik.
