House insurance for longer trips
We are planning a trip touring various parts of Europe, starting April returning mid July. We realise that we will need to inform house insurers and pay some extra but we're rather shocked at how much extra it was. Have others found this to be the case? Advice welcome please.

My house policy is 45 nights so there would appear to be no industry norm.

I've tried (at least twice) to switch to C&CC for this very reason but they have been massively expensive...
as TG mentions, we are with Saga and just tell them we will be away a bit longer than the 60 day 'std'...

We were with Prudential for decades but once our daughter left home we changed to insuring through CCC because of the 180 days in any year that we could be away. The policy is with Royal and Sun Alliance. Prudential couldn't offer anything near, the premium through CCC was half of the Pru for equal cover (plus the extra time away) for combined building and contents and the Pru representative said that RSA was a company of equal standing and reputation to the Pru.
Unfortunately, last year whilst we were in France we had a break in at home. RSA/CCC dealt with things efficiently, speedily and very fairly. They initially dealt with my daughter until we returned. The house was quickly secured and locks changed as some spare keyswere in the safe which was wrenched from its fixings and taken. My daughter found dealing with them very easy and once we returned RSA settled the claim easily and completely to our satisfaction. There was an excess of £50 for contents and £50 for building so I expected an excess of £100 as both back and front doors were damaged and various contents were stolen. However it was only £50 as it was one claim. (I don't know if this is normal with other companies).
When the renewal schedule arrived a few months later there was only a modest increase.

Many thanks for all the information. I will follow up the suggestions. As usual folk have been very friendly.
Yes another David I do believe we are on the same crossing. We are a VW Tiguan towing a Coachman VIP. We will look out for you and say hello.
