DD there was a tragic accident at Rowntree Park but now is not the time to re-live the very sad events. It was not a speeding accident.

I've got no further comments to make on this thread.

I understood it was at Grafham Water. If that is correct then it means two, or more, sad fatalities and even more reason why drivers need to take care and slow down.

When people complain about the behaviour of others on site, be it irresponsible dog owners or speeding drivers, I tend to ask if it was brought it to the attention of the wardens. Most complainers don't bother but, on this occasion, the right course of action was taken, albeit in rather a forthright manner, and got a superb response from the warden.

Well done that warden but shame on the reckless speeder - there was seemingly no excuse. Proof too that thoughtlessness/irresponsibility can result in dog mishaps.

"due care" in confined areas like camp sites does not mean that the site speed limits can be "adjusted up" undecided

Surely observing the speed limit is part of driving with due care? One cannot be said to be driving with due care if one is breaking the speed limit.

I wasn't really posting about either dogs or speeding and if you had taken the trouble to read my post properly you would realise that.  I didn't suggest that my friend wasn't speeding and he didn't argue when he was spoken to about it by the Warden.  As I mentioned he couldn't possibly have been doing more than 10 mph and there were no children about at all - it was well after dark.  I am very sorry to hear that there was a child fatality on a campsite but that has absolutely no relevance to this post.

Couldn't possibly? How's that then? It's not the speed over the sleeping policeman it's the speed between that counts! Many the time I've seen those sprints between and sudden breaking! In fact I've seen it today several times!

it's also fun to watch those that really slow down for the car to over the humps then forget they are towing and speed up straight away and the van's wheels then bounces over the humpssmile

The Sleeping Policemen at Burrs are quite steep ones and they are mostly spaced at intervals of only 100 metres or so.  I had driven the circuit several times and found that trying to drive at anything more than 5-10 mph was really impractical, hence my judgement that my friend, whose driving style I know (he's a cautious ex-driving instructor) and who drives a classic Rover 75 rather than an SUV, and he was was towing his caravan, was unlikely to have exceeded 10 mph.  There is of course quite a difference between 5 and 10 mph, especially perhaps if the outfit is passing you close by while you are pitching up - and especially perhaps if you are judging speed as a self-righteous, self-important traffic warden might do.

I think that the OP and his friend were totally blameless and that the OP was right to feel aggrieved.

His friend was merely speeding on site in the dark. The OP was also merely in the dark with a dog he could neither see nor control with it being off-lead. He also made an attempt, in the dark, to pick up any unseen deposits from either dog despite the difficulties imposed by him not being able to track them in the dark All totally reasonable behaviors.

I can't speak for others David wink

I can say though that it would be rare for me to exceed 4mph on site, let alone 5mph. I cannot recall in having a problem with any warden in the last 35+ years but I suppose/hope that there is time yet.

I have seen plenty of dog owners who do not abide by the rules but never been overly inconvenienced on more than a couple of occassions

Quite the opposite, some of us have gathered that there really are folk who speed on site, don't check out whether it's ok to let their dogs off leads etc etc and then come on here to have a rant about those that notice these things.

By the way, the previously mentioned issue of it being dark and no children around so speeding wasn't an issue is worrying to say the least regarding safety on site.

Ah well, I've come back on here when I didn't intend too. But at least the matter was resolved well by the warden.

Ah yes, a club site in the cold dark months of winter. You'll appreciate the 16A EHU supply then! wink
