In that scenario it looks like preparation would need to start at least 130 days before departure if I add the time intervals correctly

    Reply to ValDa,

I notice even you have highlighted the 'what MIGHT happen'

Under this heading we could also say the EU might construct a barrier in the middle of the english channel and ask the UK government to pay for its construction.

If you want to travel in April and want to make bookings for April and have a pet that you want to travel with you in April, and you don't know if there will be a deal, and you don't know if the UK will be a listed country or not then it makes sense to follow guidelines for all scenarios to ensure the travel can go ahead at the chosen date.

What 'might' happen only has two or three scenarios that can play out, and none of them includes the silly statement of a barrier in the channel.

Yes, Paul, point proved, but we HAVE to travel to France over the Brexit period and therefore we can't wait to find out what WILL happen.  Would you suggest we just sit back and wait and see - and then find we can't travel with our pet after all?   There may be many other people in a similar position and this post was intended for them, not the others who probably don't travel with pets at all, and are unconcerned except to discuss semantics.

And to Easy T, if your pet is already microchipped and vaccinated against rabies,  and has a rabies titre blood test on the 9th November, you would get the results in two weeks, (say 26th November) and provided the test proves positive for antibodies, you'd be able to travel before 1st March.  (So ninety days, plus 14 days).  So not quite the same timescale you quote.  Once the blood test is proved positive thereafter the only thing you need to do is to keep up to date with booster injections, and get a 'Fit to travel' certificate ten days before travel.

Fair enough, I'll expect something on topic and useful to the thread title then.

I was thinking if not already vaccinated

I am aware of the current government advice about taking the dog abroad in the event of no brexit. My delemna is that I will already be abroad on 29.3.19 and not planning to return home until May 2019. Has anybody any idea what The Governments requirements are for returning the dog to the UK

I think the government has bigger problems on its mind, but my guess is that you will both be allowed back.

They might ask the dog how it’s feeling. If it answers “Ruff” you have a problem..........laughing

sorry, not helpful, but perhaps read some of the guidance already posted?

We'll be in a similar position, and in order to comply in the event of a No Deal and the UK becoming an unlisted 'third country', we've already had a blood test for our cat.  It cost £90 and we should have the result this Friday.  Providing it's positive for an immunity to rabies, that means we can travel outwards with no problem (because on our outward travel date we will be in the EU) but we will also be able to bring her back into the UK if the regulations become much more strict,  in line with the guidelines in the link in the first post.  In that event we would just need a certificate from a vet to say that she was fit to travel.

you were right to do this well in advance, we are booked on ferry to Cherbourg 2nd Apr, took fido to vets today for blood test, told it could take 3 weeks for results to return, cost £145, if he fails then he needs new rabies jab and then at least 30 days after jab he can have another blood test this could take us into early Jan at best and provided 2nd blood test is ok then he can travel 3 months after blood test done which could take us into mid April, bit of a cliff hanger. I wonder how many people are out there who are not aware of any of this, have to say Brexit is looking less likely but mother Theresa is not going to give in easily.

Results are back from the lab blood test for Rabies antibodies (£96), all good and she is well above the mark. Results are filed at the vet practice, just need a copy of that and a certificate within 10 days before we travel in April assuming no deal, otherwise it stays as it is so both options are now covered.

hope we have same result, just out of interest when did your Fido have last Rabies jab, ours was only 12 months ago so vet thinks should be ok. a little bit of piste, info from BF, if you have to cancel as a result of this then provided you cancel within their normal 5 day time span then you will get a voucher for full trip that is valid for 2 years, I think a lot of people, are not aware of these possioble restrictions. BF office in Poole were not aware of the possible new rules.

She has a 3 year Rabies vaccination, first was in March 2014, second and the last one was March 2017.

Our cat's results were positive, too - a high level of antibodies, so we're in the same position - we can travel outwards whenever we want, knowing that whatever date we come back we will be covered - the only stipulation being that ten days before returning we shall have to visit a French vet for a 'Fit to Travel' cerificate.

I read somewhere recently that the certificate you get to travel only lasts for 40 days. Bit tricky if you go away for 3 or 4 months as a lot of us do.

The certificate you get from the UK Vet allows outward travel into Europe.  If you're allowed to stay for three or four months and the UK certificate is no longer valid then you simply get another certificate from a European Vet to say your pet is fit to travel on the return journey.

I read some of the blurb issued by the EU yesterday that seemed to confirm that a No Deal will mean no pets allowed after our exit.

Wonder what the EU will do with those already there with the over wintering campers?

Hope I misread it for those planning to take your pet.

You didn't hear wrong. I also heard on Euro News that the pet travel passport will no longer be accepted. I expect one would have to read the detail to see what is actually meant.

The "government" it seems have now removed the word "unlikely" from their literature.

Be warned, despite only having been vaccinated 9 months ago for rabies, we were told today by our vet that our pouch had failed the blood test, insufficient anti bodies. He will have new vaccination today, and new blood test circ 22 nd Jan, provided this blood test is positive we will be able to travel mid/end April, not what we wanted as to justify the ferry costs etc we would have liked 3 months away rather than the now proposed 2, cant be in Spain July/August too hot.  Hopefully we will get a deal over Brexit, but not looking good, I wonder how many more restrictions will be imposed upon us, cant be good for tourism within Europe lots of caravanners/MH owners take pets into Europe. If no Brexit deal seriously thinking of making Europe a no go area and sticking to UK, if we get continuing good summers who needs Europe.
