Your passport after Brexit - Government guidance
The Government have issued some guidance on what 'might' happen if there is a Brexit 'No Deal'.
Basically we will go back to the requirement for having six months still valid on our passports, and any additional months added because a passport was renewed early will not count.

Just renewed mine online today. That advice about 6 months etc was on the website. My unexpired portion of the expiring passport will not be carried forward and as we may well be in France when it expires early in the New Year decided to renew just in case.

It's a good idea that anyone with a passport which has added extra months, and which is due to expire next year, checks their own passport using the tool on the link in my first post. It may surprise you, as it did Deleted User User.
There will be many many people who won't find this information out before they set off. ............! It's a good thing that on forums such as this people are sharing the information. Some forums and Facebook groups won't allow any mention of Brexit - even though it's essential that we are able to share 'what might happen' (even if it doesn't!)

So in the event of a "no deal' we are now going to lose unexpired bits on our passports. A bit like giving a bit of Calor back on an exchange cylinder. What I don't quite understand is how we lose any added months. Surely the expiry date of the document is what counts or is this a cunning plan to sell you a 9.5 year passport at a 10 year price?

As far as I can determine they have changed the rules about not including unexpired months.I my be wrong but can't find a clear explanation.
My current passport was issued in October but the expiry date is April. I can't see why Brexit would make any difference whatsoever. The EU countries will only be concerned with expiry dates not when it was issued. A bit of a con in my view.

Exactly my point. It's the expiry date that counts, surely.

I actually ordered a new one as my current one will expire before I return from France so I had no option (apart from waiting a month or two) but to order a new one. My brother isn't too well and lives in France so I'm just being cautious. I'll let you know when it comes back if they've included the unexpired portion or not.

Thank you for this ValDa. I have just checked mine and found that I have eight added months expiring Jan 20, so I just get this years holiday and back within the 90 day rule!
And if I wait to renew Jan 20 I will get one of the new blue real British passports!

The new passports will be phased in after the UK leaves the EU on March 29, 2019.
Burgundy passports will continue to be issued, although without the European Union markings, until the current supplier's contract expires in October 2019.0
