The Cornwall Rip off
I love Cornwall, the coastal scenery is the best in the South of England. We include that county every year during our south coast tour. But I notice that they are becoming greedy with their car parking charges. Rarely do you visit any town, beach or bay without being ripped off for car parking. They are in danger of pricing themselves out of existence with tourists voting with their feet and touring elsewhere which would be a great shame.

Living in Cornwall, and therefore being a visitor elsewhere, I am obviously keen to learn of these other areas that you hint at where parking is not felt to be a 'rip off'?
One thing that I do not have experience off is any issues specific to MH parking so maybe that's what you are referring to?
This morning I was looking at sites for a possible visit to Glasgow in 2019 and whilst I may when faced with paying for parking think it expensive/rip off etc, it will be be a fraction of a fraction of what I will have spent to get to Scotland and then stay there!

yes have to agree, all tourist areas/sites all over the UK share this common theme.
The other week it was approaching £10 to park in Keswick for the day. Even Grasmere was over £5 for the afternoon.
But last Easter, centre of Edinburgh was the most expensive.

Parking is a rip off in tourist areas wherever one goes and Cornwall is no different in that respect. But out of season (now until the start of March) most council car parks are free, unlike our home town where, like many others I guess, the car parking charges are one factor in the demise of our high street. Many popular tourist spots in Cornwall are NT owned and parking charges for non members are extremely high. Again, I don't believe that's any more the case in Cornwall than anywhere else.
Out of interest, K, when were you last in Cornwall, whereabouts and what time of year? What did you pay for parking?

Yes I'm interested in exactly which car parks in Cornwall are a rip off?
What a strange post. Most holiday busy places charge quite a bit for parking.
Of course if they are in Scotland and no-one is visiting they will be free to encourage visitors...
The SW had it's largest influx of visitors this year.
Just had a quick tourism check...in 2017 Edinburgh was the most expensive place to stay in the UK.

Parking in our city is very expensive, can't tell you what as we don't use them 😉. But 2 1/2 years ago it was £5 + all day for long stay. We recently went to St Albans for the day and over 6 hours £12. It seems to be the way if the world.

I live in Cornwall and very rarely pay much for parking - it will only be 60p an hour in town later this morning and free of charge with a National Trust card at many of their small coastal car parks like Lansallos and Lantic Bay, but that's with a car as I have no experience of motorhomes.

We live here so can easily compare car parking charges with tourist spots elsewhere. I’d say they’re no better and no worse in Cornwall. Perhaps it depends on one’s personal viewpoint of reasonable / cheap / expensive.
How fortunate we are in living here and being able to take advantage of free parking in many places at this time of year! The council doesn’t maintain the charging in out of town car parks in winter because they tend to be very lightly used and it would cost more than it’s worth to empty machines. In town, the charges stay but I don’t find them excessive at just over £1 per hour.
Privately owned car parks are, of course, a law unto themselves.
Is it me but I have a feeling we’ve had this discussion before?

I do agree that Cities all over the UK can be expensive for parking. But countryside and natural features IMO should be either free to park or charge a nominal amount. Small towns likewise. Otherwise visitors will be put off spending their money and helping the local economy in areas of high parking charges.
I don't know about the area known as Londonshire as I've never been tempted to tour there. (Used to fly down to London regularly for business Meetings and I was not impressed by the place).
Cornwall IMO need to rethink their summer parking charges or they will find that they will lose tourism to other areas which have free parking or nominal parking at rural and natural features as well as small villages and towns.

Kennine. Making derogatory remarks like "Londonshire," saying Cornwall is a rip off isn't exactly going to enamour you with anyone on here.
Cornwall is so popular, efforts have been made to de-promote some areas this summer due to traffic jams etc.
Please get your facts straight K.
Anyway, as they say, I'm out.

There is a park-and-ride right at Junction 1 of the M74 with no height restriction and a wide barrier entrance. Travel into city centre on the Subway and the parking costs a few pounds. Don't know price for visitors as my local travel card gets a discounted price.

Didn't seem to put many off this year K! overflow parks were also doing well. Think the average for all day this August was about £6. Now if you want a rip off, try Weston Super Mare sea front, its £6 no matter how long you want to park. Its a real rip off if you only want to stop for an hour or two and blue badges don't count either. Luckily I came across a very helpful warden.

Try Cambridge's Park & Ride if you want to dig deep. Can't remember prices now, but the charges for both parking & bus fares on the busrail (I'd never heard of one until then) were anything but cheap. It would have been cheaper to park in the city which surely defeats the object of Park & Ride.

We haven’t been to Cornwall for three years. Unless something has changed dramatically, my recollection of the area where we stayed, St Anne’s (Beacon) is that most car parks just had an honesty box! Even car parks in small coastal bays.
We did pay at St Ives but it wasn’t excessive.
Now if you want comparisons try Canterbury where we live, or worse Brighton!

We recently toured Northumberland and Borders with our MH. Only had to pay in two car parks, and one was in Alnwick on Food and Drink festival weekend. So busy we had to use Alnwick Castle car park, but it wasn’t over expensive. Never paid a thing elsewhere. Berwick, Seahouses, Bamburgh, Coldstream, St Abbs, Eyemouth, North Berwick, Amble, Wooler etc........all free. I think we paid on Lindisfarne.
Then we toured SW. Had to pay almost everywhere other than NT. Boscastle, we paid. Fowey, we paid. Okehampton, we paid (got a bit back in Waitrose.) Tavistock, MHs banned from main carpark, we eventually found other cp, and paid. Topsham, we paid. Chanced it for a late night dog walk near St Austell, and Caerhays Beach rather surprisingly free.
The difference between the two tours was enough for me to pass comment, but I think the former was the more unusual, we normally have to pay most places. So there you go, NE is rather more welcoming for visitors with motor vehicles.

Good to know AD. Once we venture overseas I will look for best advice on Toll roads as well.

Its interesting how loosely people use the term rip off. I would have thought most parking fees can be research beforehand so you know what you are letting yourself in for and therefore have choice. You might not like the price. Being ripped off to me is being charged extra for something that you couldn't have reasonably foreseen? A few months ago we stayed in Twickenham which most people would consider as being in London and I paid around £11 for two days in a multi storey carpark whch I thought was good value. There are elements of pricing which I don't like and the one mentioned by Peedee where you are charged a set fee for how ever long you stay is one of them. But if you know that in advance you are not being ripped off.

Have to say we more more surprised at not having to pay as much in NE, than having to pay in SW. Some places seem quite expensive, others not so, but its all part of the holiday budget overall. One of worst parking areas we know is Whitby and Scarborough. I recall spending a fiver just to park up and have a pee, before we even started looking around Whitby, and you can’t transfer tickets between lower town car park, and the one up by the Abbey. It’s either pay again or tackle the climb up and down!
Many car parks are levying charges on blue badge users as well nowadays, including, rather disgracefully our local hospital. It’s almost a tax on being unwell if you have to make regular visits with someone disabled or very elderly who requires regular check ups.

But where are these places K? I have no evidence to counter your suggestions but I would be surprised to find massive differences in a like for like provision and in some places, St Ives for example, by the time you find a space you would willingly sell your Granny to pay for it.
No offence to Grannies-I am married to a very lovely one!!

Yes, but if you are there DD.............!
This could become similar to the Yorkshireman sketch-people will be being paid to park!!

Obviously depends on one's mobility, but in high summer in Cornwall it'd be hard to beat parking at St Agnes Head (free!) and walking along the coastal path either to Chapel Porth in one direction or Trevaunance Cove in the other!

I parked top on the hill at Porthleven this summer for free so Cornwall is not universally expensive. I remember as a teenager being surprised how cheap all-day parking on the beach car parks in Bude were compared to Southsea where I came from. That was sixty years back though.

So far, Cornwall is probably the only place we have visited where we would find caravan a better choice in some ways than MH. We know certain parts of Cornwall very well, but not so easy to get to them with MH, we found ourselves using alternative routes to places, and compromising on walking. For example, we didn’t go across Bodinnick Ferry with MH as we know we would have got stuck, so it was a much longer drive round to Eastern side of Fowey Estuary. However, touring was much easier, and we did get to see more of the whole county.

Ken, it was £1 all day when we last stopped at the St Ives P&R a couple of years ago and using our bus card a free trip into the city....can't grumble at that.

We've been away for 10 weeks mostly down in the South west and I think that we only paid at a couple of car parks as we used mainly N/T ones. We did pat at Port Isaacs but then found a free one just down the road, so all one has to do is do a bit of research and get out a bit from the centre of the popular places and stretch ones legs....you know it will do you good!!

Just for information ,
Free car parks in Cornwall this time of the year , Par beach , Readymoney Fowey , Pothcothan . (Cornwall Council) , there are more but the brain has frozen up.
