Alarm not activating

We have a Sargent 310 alarm fitted to our caravan however, it won't set when we are at home but works perfectly elsewhere. Does anybody have any ideas as to why this might be?

Perhaps interference, on the particular frequency used for the fob. We have had that problem with one of our cars, in certain locations.

I wondered about that and have tried turning the wifi of to see if it was that but made no difference. Not sure what else to try or whether I can alter frequencies

What did Sargent say when you spoke to them about it?

I have only spoken to dealer so far when they checked it out for me and was working. They spoke to Sargent but haven't been able to narrow down. I assumed it must be do do with some interference at home but don't know how to pin it down so wondered if anybody on here had any ideas. I will contact Sargent direct as well

are you pressing the fob on the same side of van every time. Mine struggles most times if I am not on the same side as the alarm unit. Stupid idea to have a metal case covering the alarm unit.

The problems we had were close to obvious transmission sources such as a radar dish or transmitter array. Once the car was moved away the problem ceased, so we have never investigated further over altering frequencies. I would have thought there must be something that can be done. Certainly our wireless home alarm has a section in the manual about changing settings in the event of interference. Hopefully Sargent can advise.

By any chance, have you or a neighbour got a wireless door bell?  In theory, they shouldn't interfere with vehicle alarm systems but some cheap ones can because they're not operating on the allocated range of frequencies.

I had an experience with one of my Landrover Discos when an elderly neighbour had a cheapo wireless door bell fitted and it completely disabled my car because the doorbell button had stuck and was continuously transmitting a rogue signal. The solution was to change the dip switches inside the doorbell transmitter so that it didn't clash with my car.

Once I had discovered the problem, I did smile though.  To think that a £5 doorbell had completely immobilised a £30k car!

We had a problem with our ford transit custom on our drive. The problem came on suddenly, move the van to bottom of drive move it to the top no alarm. Nothing in our house had changed so asked the neighbor anyway after a bit of research and pressing him on anything that had changed he came up with his van which was used for storage on his drive the battery had gone flat. Battery charged problem went away, dont ask me how or why but no more problems, took us weeks to get to the bottom of the problem

Perhaps the alarm battery is depleted - when away from home the alarm is powered by the c'van battery or is the c'van connected to mains at home also ?

I tried to set my 310 alarm the day after we got home from a site & the alarm just made a strangled gurgle .... the alarm battery is goosed. I'm looking for an alternative to the OE £45 battery.

I was going to start a thread to find out why my alarm won’t set or rather come out of alarm. I do hope the OP doesn’t mind me asking this on this thread. Went to the van the other day and I tried the remote to get the alarm off but nothing- I realised that the battery in the remote was flat. I renewed it. I tried again - the LED was lighting up but nothing. I entered the caravan and set the alarm off- I tried stopping it with the remote- nothing. Fuse out! I have a Bailey Mk1 Unicorn Valencia. Any ideas anyone? The remote isn’t talking to the alarm but why?? My battery is fully charged.  Thanks.

Does  youralarm also have its own battery?  Ours has a rechargable one that draws power from the van battery.  Even though connected to mains, and van battery fully charged, if the smaller alarm battery is done for, the alarm will not respond to the fob.

When we needed a new one last year, I found one of the correct size on Amazon, think it was about £15-£20.

Sounds like something nearby is affecting it.......mobile mast......someones garage door opener......many possibilities.

We had one car which would not respond to the remote when parked at the airport, fine elsewhere.

(my comment above was in reply to Merve)

Maybe you need to pair the key to the alarm again after replacing battery? Do you have two fobs. If so is it the same with both? If not I would try pairing the alarm and key again to remove that possibility

Thanks Easy. I have changed the battery in the past and had no problems but I guess there is always the first time! All I have to do now is find out how to pair it! I do have 2 fobs and I haven’t tried it with the other fob so that must be the starting point. Thanks again (pssst- the new Red Guide is published as I said it would be🤣)

    Wot, no links? wink

We are off-topic Merve, but I did not think that the contents of the previous red book had much relevance for LPG.

AnyRoadUp, I hope that your second fob works.

you have to remove the cover from alarm box, there should be a reset button and an LED, you hold down the button at the same time as you press and hold the fob and after a few seconds the LED lights to tell you it has matched ok. hope this helps.

That’s very useful Lornalou- thanks muchly. I have discovered that the other fob that is the spare works fine while the fob we use all the time has failed- perhaps it’s lost its pairing with the alarm? - all I have to do now is discover where the alarm box is to try to re - pair it- if that doesn’t work it’ll be a new fob I’m guessing and pair that.

That’s why I put it in brackets Easy! As you see above , my second fob works so at least I have narrowed it down. Thanks for your help.
