Croatia Recommendations for May 2019
Hi All
Planning on going down to Croatia for first time end of April beginning of May next year.
Had a look at various sites but there are so many to choose from . Club article just gives a couple of sites and probably too far south for me. Quite like the look of Porec area.
Looking for a site near beach and being in motorhome (no bikes) ideally within walking distance (max 5K) of town or village with restaurants and bars.
Any recommendations gratefully received.
ps Another David guess you are down there at moment or on return journey. Have used your routes before thank you and will probably do from Rotterdam. Looked on your website but no reviews for Croatia sites or am I looking in wrong place

The only one I have stayed at is Camping Bijela Uvala It is ocated about 5Km south of Porec, Bijela Uvala and the adjacent site which belongs to the same owners, form a huge joint coastal village complex. Bijela Uvala is the quieter of the two. I think they also ran a ferry service into Porec.

We stay each year at Camping Polari 4Km from Rovinj. It is half way between Porac and Pula, so easy to visit both. Will be there again next year for the 10th year! (I think we like it)
If you want to be close to town try Campsite Porton Biondi which is 5 mins walk from the centre. You don't need to book in May so you can try what you like and just move on if it's not for you.

Camping Polari looks good but quite large. Are all sites in Crotia big?
Campsite Porton Biondi looks very convenient but can't find too many reviews on it. Normally look on ACSI but not listed.
What month do you go to Croatia each year or do you vary dates ?
Do you have a preferred route? I will be coming from Rotterdam or Zeebrugge. My plan is to get there as quickly as possible spend a few weeks then travel back more slowly.

Sounds as though you do not need to be too worried about the cost of tolls then. You could consider joining the route I used this year and use the Fern Pass from Fussen and the Brenner pass toll route into Italy and on to Trieste, across Solvenia and on to Porec. I think I would favour avoiding Antwerp and head for Eindhoven Venlo Koblenz Karlsruhe to get south?

We go mid April to mid June very year.
Polari is big but there is plenty of room, as it is out of season when you are coming you can nearly have a row to yourself if you want. Most sites on that part of Istria are large.
We don't have a rout as we visit different places on the way. One year Bled another Berlin etc.
Like I said if you find a campsite is not for you then just move on to the next. There are loads around and everyone's taste is different.

Hi, went in June this year for the first time, our story is on the club stories page. 3/4 days to get there if non stop, Dunkerque, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. Austrian Vignettes online or at a German service station, Slovenian vignette in Austria. Croatia is lovely, some sites are big. ACSI works well and sites don’t seem to mind when you arrive.
Enjoy the trip we’ll be doing it again in a few years.

We used Croatia as the end point of our Grand Tour (Amsterdam, Hanover, Prague, Bled, Novigrad, Sirmione, Fussen, Frankfurt & Remscheid (family) Amsterdam)
The issue of passing the Neum corridor has been raised several times and needs to be included in your planning if you want to go to Dubrovnik.
We chose to go as far south as Pula and were sorry to have missed Plitvice due to late departure from UK.
The site at Novigrad (Mareda) which was our only base was right on the beach with fantastic sunsets, not busy out of season and a reasonable walk from the interesting town with boat trips down the coast.
It worked for us but your needs may be different- enjoy!

Thanks TravellingPeacocks & DougS for information. All helping in my planning although as always like to remain flexible. I see CAMC have some extra sites in Croatia not yet received my brochure yet though. May be useful as I will have 13 site vouchers when we go (accumulated from ferry offers). Anybody stayed at Camping Park Umag?

"Anybody stayed at Camping Park Umag?" We did many years ago but looking at the Croatian Camping Club website it seems to have developed into a massive holiday park with a capacity for over 8,000 guests! Link
Large sites are not untypical of Croatia,but even the largest are well run. Unless you want the full-on Tuetonic holiday experience, best avoid high season!

Sounds a plan Deleted User User.
Has anyone got a good recommendation for a road atlas covering Slovenia and Croatia? My satnav only covers Western Europe and does not have capacity to load more maps. I am assuming I will be able to use google maps on my iphone but always like to have hard copies as well.

Suggest you have a look at Michelin. Back in 2006 I used Michelin's map number 736 and for more detail an Insight map of Croatia. My Co-Pilot sat nav now covers both countries and I use OsmAnd+ on my phone and have not bothered obtaining more up to date paper versions.

Camp Amarin is near Rovinj, stayed in June this yearVery busy site, part of a large hotel, chalet complex and still has over 600 pitches which vary in size and how level they are. Found a spot back from beach, quiet and only a few vans near us, had a bit of shade and explored the site, this one has all the amenities, water taxi into town if required and its own beach. Could get noisy near the beach but away from it quieted down. Lots of toilet blocks some a little dated but seemed to be cleaned continuously. Free Wifi only in spots but one is on the beach and a wonderful place to watch the sunset and the views over Rovinj are worth sitting for.

The campsite that ticks all your boxes is Kovacine on the island of Cres. It's not too far south and easy to get to by ferry (no booking required). Camping Kovacine

If you have an ipad or other tablet, get the Co-pilot app. It's an off-line satnav which covers all or Europe. It also has built-in campsite POI, and will take Archie's POIs.
