Motorhomes and the white peg rule

Good point DD, it’s a well known fact that fire/flames have lost their capacity over distance to ignite LV’s over the last ‘50’ years👍🏻🙄🤔

Thankyou, I had Heard of flame retardant material DD, but I’m the kind of person who goes the extra few yards/metres when safety is concerned, im a big believer in. . . .’One life lost is one too many.’ I could go on but I don’t want to stress you with too much to think about

You’re last sentence is a prime example of what’s wrong with this forum... absolutely no need for it!
your not alone though DD, I go away and come back from time to time and it is still prevalent from numerous contributors.
I agree with your sentiment about spacing, H&S is taken to far in modern times, but there’s a lot of talk about the future of CT and the ‘friendly’ image it needs to portray to have a successful future. This ‘sniping’ is dragging this forum, and the image it conveys, further and further down.
I said I would and I have, written to the Community Manager with my thoughts about what is wrong herein.

I’m sure she'll answer in due course, Nige, but what has that to do with parking to the peg?
Do you have any experiences of bad pitching?

DD perhaps if you could swing by a camc site pop to the office and ask to look at some photos of burnt out caravans (lack of fire retardant material) on camc sites with the 6m rule in place you will see it makes a darn site more difference than you would like to admit
funny some complaining 6m is too much space yet pitches have got wider as they were deemed too tight by other members. Funny old world

From 2009 From West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
Holiday Caravan Sites
The foregoing standards should apply to Holiday and Touring caravan sites subject to the
following modifications:Density and Space Between Caravans
Subject to the following variations, the minimum spacing distance between caravans made
of aluminium or other materials with similar fire performance properties should be not less
than 5 metres between units, 3.5 metres at the corners. For those with a plywood or similar
skin it should be not less than 6 metres. Where there is a mixture of holiday caravans of
aluminium and plywood, the separation distance should be 6 metres; and where there is a
mixture of permanent residential homes and holiday caravans, the separation distance
should again be 6 metres. The point of measurement for porches, awnings etc are the
exterior cladding of the caravan.
Porches may protrude 1m into the 5 metres and should be of the open type.
Where awnings are used, the distance between any part of the awning and an adjoining
caravan should not be less than 3 metres. They should not be of the type that incorporates
sleeping accommodation and they should not face each other or touch.
Eaves, drainpipes and bay windows may extend into the 5 metre space provided the total
distance between the extremities of 2 adjacent units is not less than 4.5 metres.
Where there are ramps for the disabled, verandas and stairs extending from the unit, there
should be 3.5m clear space between them (4.5m if mixture of caravans) and such items
should not face each other in any space. If they are enclosed, they may need to be
considered as part of the unit and, as such, should not intrude into the 5m (or 6m) space.0 -

Probably because its designated as parking rather than a campsite. I am sure people do stay there overnight but many might just be there for a matter of hours. Whilst its good that Canterbury Council have been a bit forward looking in providing parking for motorhomes there is a perfectly good alternative at the C&CC site about a mile away with a good bus service from outside the gate which would be my choice as it was when I visited Canterbury.
I don't understand this rational of arguing against the Club and how they space units. None of us that use Club sites want to be crammed in like sardines, its nice to have a bit of space and privacy.

The regs on spacing are put in place by the LA so if they choose to run their awful looking van park to different standards, they can.
The C&CC site, btw, is a very good one.

Probably the same as Chester and Cheshire West local aouthority. Ihey make provision for overnight parking for motorhomes and coaches but nowhere do they mention sleeping in outfits.
Some counties specifically forbid it on their carparks as do Cheshire East

Perhaps it has a disclaimer, only park if you accept terms and conditions and don’t hold council liable for any problems. There’s usually some small print somewhere.

LA's normally include it without amendment in the site licences they issue
Not surprising then that CC adhere to it then.
I was speaking to a couple from Ireland on a CC site and they were saying how nice it is to be on a site with more space than they were used to at home.

Obviously European councils/ areas dont have similar Health and Safety fire spacing rules ? Or if they have....Everyone appears to ignore them.
For us it was just the tiny pitches and closeness of everyone that finally put us off of continental touring, especially on Aires...We couldnt get used to going to sleep then waking up with a van so close that they nearly hit our electric step.....then they moaned because our door was on the 'wrong' side.
Thank goodness for Club Sites and the 6 metre rule....and i dont mind the pegs either. Just to get some privacy, not thinking about fire.

Better still Kev, get him to call in at Broadway site and chat to the warden about the night the brand new motorhome caught fire and almost destroyed the neighbouring outfits and how he felt mentally for weeks afterwards about what was almost a life threatening situation.
It might be a very rare occasion but the risk is still there.

David,
You seem to have Continental touring sorted, do you return to the same sites ? Or do you try new ones ?
Our Continental touring was mainly negative because of the overcrowding on even quite expensive sites, so price is no guarantee of a reasonable sized pitch. Our friends had said Aires are the way to go, we hated most of them. As too overcrowded.
Horses for courses, we'll stick with the Club sites and a few CL's
