    It definitely is what floats your boat.

     

    For me Melrose is a no, Edinburgh yes. East coast is good, little to no midges at any time of year. 

     

    We did a trip with a 6 berth caravan  many years ago around Scotland in 14 days with 2 teenagers and a dog. 

     

    Our route was, Perth, Inverness, Thurso, Ullapool, Kyle of Lochalsh, Ben Nevis then  a site somewhere in the Great Glen, home to Perth from there. I appreciate you do have to drive to Perth first. 

     

    When we went to France in September we overnighted at Moffat then across to see our son at Penistone, onto Loughborough for overnight then Dover. We could have easily done, Perth, Thirsk, Dover as we have many times before but had things to do in those places and plenty of time to hand.

     

    As flatcoat said roads up to Scotland are fine and the A9 north of Perth is good in places, coast road to Aberdeen is also good, we go to Stonehaven quite often, it takes about 80 mins from our village, 40 mins of that is cutting across country to Forfar where the dual carriageway is.

    thank you for some great advice .I don't think that I will stop for Emmerdale. I feel like driving  about 400 miles then stopping for the night, then on to inverness.  as solobay said there is not much at john O groats I just want to say I have been, could I drive from inverness to john o groats solo in a day and back to inverness ? just another thought.

    Driving solo you could but would that give you the opportunity to see the bits of the north that are actually more interesting than J o'G? 

    In my opinion, J o'G itself is not worth that drive. The villages and coast of Sutherland and the area from J o'G to Thurso and beyond are what makes the journey worthwhile. You will miss so much by targetting only J o'G.

    Agree - I would tow that bit further to Brora and use that as a base for a few days exploring. Lairg, Golspie (Dunrobbin Castle), Old Pultney tour at Wick. chippy at Helmsdale

    I must admit that dunnet bay looks a brilliant site like everyone says there is so much to see. perhaps I should plan to do one side of side of Scotland at a time ? or break it up even more

    I definitely would, Magnet. I reckon you’re trying to do too much in one go. How you break it up depends on your own preferences.

    I would split it in two but north / south with the divide being Inverness,

    5/6 days in north west, same in north east - one day to cross over

    Hard bit is getting from Kent to Inverness so why do it twice.

    We do a fortnight up there every year - sometimes more
