Drive to slovenia
i watched a programme on TV last night about Slovenia, and wondered how long would it take to drive there and how many stops you would need (a ball park figure)

Hi Husky, thinking about Croatia next year and after seeing the recent article in the Club magazine thinking of a few nights in Slovenia en route so will be interested in the response you get.
What was the program/which channel?

It's about 900 miles and motorway most of the way - so some would say 3 days each way, others would take a fortnight, but if you are time limited then you can fly with EasyJet for £100 return and rent a car when you get there. Motorhomes and caravans are not the only way !

We visited Slovenia this June. We made 3 stops on the way down 2 just for one night, we stopped at Lake Chiemsee on way down, that meant we could get to Lake Bled in one go. Slovinia was a pleasant surprise and we are hoping to go back again next year. Though probably wouldn't stay at camping lake Bled again.

Thanks for that Husky. I did see an article a couple of weeks ago about the series and how an escapee had been able to speak with the lady who had sheltered and helped him but been away on a rally, for two weeks, and forgot so thank heavens for catch up TV.

Thinking about visiting Slovenia and staying at Bled this year as part of a larger trip to Croatia. I am hearing quite negative comments about Bled. It's our first visit so we don't have experience of good sites and bad. Any advice would be welcome. Our planned route will be Rotterdam through Germany, stopping twice, then into Austria, stopping once, then to Slovenia, stopping once and then into Croatia.
Rob.

We are planning to take our caravan down to Croatia this coming spring. Our route will probable be through France,Germany,Austria and Slovinia and into Croatia.
We do have some places we are planning to stop off and look around but we do not want to stick to a timetable, so can anyone tell me how frequently you come across camping sites. Also can anyone recommend some that have that special wow factor
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Same way as i'm heading down, then up to Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium and France. Mid April-mid July.
Got a route planned out with campsites along the way, but nothing booked apart from a night a the ballet in Budapest.

I'm not sure about the wow factor but the following sites en-route are very convenient for visiting the attractive towns close by: Metz municipal campsite (a short walk into Metz Centre), Neckergrund campsite (short bus rise from the site into Heidelburg), Two sites very close to the beautiful town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany (20 min walk into town) and the campsite next to the sports club in Straubing (beautiful town about 20 mins walk away) between Regensburg and Passau.

We stayed on the Bled site for 3 nights. It is in a great location, but I would choice your pitch carefully if heavy rain is forecast. We didn't and had a flooded pitch for 2 days. You might need 2 electric cables too as some of the EHU's are few and far between.
Other than the lake I would thoroughly recommend you visit the Vintgar Gorge it was amazing. Get there as soon as the ticket office opens, to avoid the crowds. Think it was about 8€ each.

Looking for a nice site for a one night stop over somewhere around Cologne. We think the leg from Rotterdam to Wiesbaden, our first destination, is too long for us. Heading for Croatia eventually, it's our first trip to this part of the world, Rob.

Campground Rhein-Mosel in Koblenz is good for an overnight visit to the Rhein gorge. There's a ferry for 1 euro from the site for visiting the town centre. Lots to see in the immediate area of the campsite. If you've not visited the Rhein area this is a good place to start.

Thanks for the confirmation about Slovenian vignette buying, as few websites cover this. I see the vignette is only valid from when you buy it which is awkward when you are traveling around after you leave the UK

As we going via Prague and Vienna we bought all of the required vignettes at:
https://www.tolltickets.com/default.aspx?lang=en-GB.
Very efficient but you do have to decide on pretty exact dates.
It is another option if you like to have everything in advance.

We went in May 2016. Shortly after the Karawanken tunnel and after the toll area there is a service area with fuel and food. We bought our vignette there.
Like David, we have visited Bled twice. The first time it rained so much on the second day we had ducks swimming past the caravan door! In 2016 it was lovely. A pleasant walk around the lake with lunch in the village at the far end. You should also take time to drive up the valley to Bohinj.

We did it in 2017 and took 3 and a half days each way......not enough time to enjoy the journey....just enough time each day to get the chairs out and have a cuppa and a short walk. We would have loved to have a look around at our overnight stops.

On a variation of places to visit if staying at Bled - we went on the train to Italy (Gorizia) from the local train station €13 return in 2018, although it takes 90 minutes - beautiful scenery through the valleys and the main town in Gorizia only 20 minutes walk from the station.

From our visit to Bled, Camping Bled right on the lake appears to have had a lot of work done and the bulk of the pitches are now effectively hard standings plus the restaurant was very good, in our opinion. The Mixed Beer and deer goulash were really good.
Overall, the days we spent there were a great part of the trip with walks and biking round the lake and don't forget the Bled Cake!
The castle was a bit restricted and under repair plus it was raining which rather restricted the fabulous views.
Another David's advice on the motorway exit above was very helpful

There’s an excellent Motorhome Stellplatz next to the visitor car park at the Postojna caves too, about 150 metres from the entrance and a 15 minute walk into the town. It’s 20 Euros for an overnight stay but it has electric, water and waste disposal. Some may say that’s expensive but we thought it good value for its convenience and a good nights sleep. Once the visitors have departed in the early evening it’s very quiet.
