New Tug

Hi

Going to change my tow car, tend to keep my vehicles for a long time, had a Sorento for a while now but fancy a change. Thinking of either a Grand Cherokee or Shogun, any thoughts on either of these cars? Have heard of rust problems with Shoguns and anyone who has either of these what fuel consumption are you getting? This isn't a deciding factor as the comfort and reliability are more important.

Thanx in advance

Are you talking about the new model Shogun or the previous one?

If it's the previous with the 3.2 engine, we found it to be a very comfortable car and a superb tug. The downside was about 16mpg towing but around 26-30 solo. I think rust may have been a feature in very early models but saw no sign of it in our 2011 car. Servicing costs were sky high but ours had an all inclusive package so we weren't affected. I’d have another if a tug was needed and would check out the new model.

We have a 2004 Shogun 3.2 Auto that we have had for 14 years. We get around 20 mpg towing heavy van's with no problems at all. We stopped using main dealers for service because they got to dear, and know use a small family place at half the cost and a better service.

Grand Cherokee every time, you won't be disappointed. 3litre v6, 8 speed auto with tc and 250 bhp.

Shogun. basic 4 cyl 190 bhp and 5 speed auto.

A Jeep GC is high on my list as a replacement tow car (not many heavy weight slush box autos around these days) ... do they have any particular potential faults or things to look out for?

Only had mine 7 months and no problems at all. had to get used to the foot operated parking brake but that's ok with me now. The multijet 3 litre is so smooth and never misses a beat. If every caravanner tried one before hand there would be a dam site more on the road but these are not thought about when people want to replace their tugs.

The new Shogun Sport. 2.4litre 8 speed auto -

The old one which LL calls 'basic' is still available and worthy of consideration. In fact, with a new model in the offing, it could be a darned good buy as bargains will be sure to be found.

yep and the tow limit is down to 3.1 ton from 3.5 which tells me the kerbweight will be lower. looks a bit like an overgrown qashqai

Do you know, that doesn’t bother me in the least. My days of needing a tow car are long gone. 👍🏻

I tow with a Shogun and it is the only vehicle I have replaced with the same model, and I have had a lot of vehicles.

It is reliable as hell, heavy, and could pull an office block up a scree slope. It is very stable tug and you seriously need to watch your speed when towing. it has a range of about 350miles on long run towing.

The downsides, its not cheap to run, there are more composed vehicles on the road and it is an old model now.

Look at the owner reviews on the popular car websites, the owners love them and I can see why, its a good old fashioned heavy 4x4, reliable, so very capable.

Agree that it will pull anything but like you said "old fashioned" and some would prefer a thoroughbred rather than a shire. smile

Totally agree, like the shire horse it works tirelessly for many years in a reassuring  reliable controlled way. Not like your thoroughbred that is highly strung, prone to break down and will most certainly have a much shorter life.

Yes, shire horse every time if you are looking for reliability and confidence in your tug. Modern tugs have so many reliability issues, just read of the software issues with Cherokee auto boxes and various oil leaks, Landrover electrical gremlins etc, the Shogun has a proven record of reliability and no I don't own one.

I use a humble little Volvo XC70 AWD fitted with a small D5 auto diesel engine that fits into the Shire class. innocent

Personal preference, yes, but you can’t prefer one over the others until you’ve tried them.

That’s a very sweeping statement, LL, and one that is both nonsensical and somewhat derogatory.

I used to tow with a 140PS 2WD 09 Kuga. Good 'middle of the road' car. NOT middle-lane, I hasten to add.

Is yours a Grand Cherokee?  It looks identical in the picture to our Cherokee (only 2.0l).  Love ours, one our best towcars.
