Snipe 2 Satellite Dish
I have just bought an automatic Snipe 2 from Amazon for £281 (and another £14 postage).
There is one left.

Seems a bargain. Not sure how far into France you will get UK programs like BBC/ITV?

You are absolutely right however the cheap dish on a stand takes me time I haven’t got. My disabled husband can’t help so I have to do everything even down to his personal care needs.
Having something automatically do something for me will be a big help AND give my husband something to focus on other then the scenery.
We never ever considered TV on holiday before but now it is important to keep my husband’s attention.
The Snipe claims to have a range equivalent to a 60 cm dish.

Agree about the faff of setting up although at present I'm fit enough and, having set one up for decades, it takes only a matter of minutes. The other advantage is I can move the dish around the pitch which can give greater choice of pitches on arrival at site and a better chance of hitting that signal on some. What works best for individuals though is important.

Pukka idea Arty, one box ✔️ & one less stress to add on to a potential stressful situation👍🏻😊

I know what you mean artyboo as my wife is brain damaged and I have to do everything but I wonder how you go on in a motor home as I would have thought a little tight for room unless it's been adapted of coarse. I found a caravan with a bigger than average mid bathroom was better to attend to her needs.

Nothing wrong with making life easier for yourselves if you can. I wonder what the difference is between a Snipe 2 and a 4, not a lot I suspect if you just want to use it in UK or northern France. Sounds like a good buy. Enjoy your travels.

Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid question.
if you have a satellite dish on your van ,do you have to have a sky or other subscription decoder to watch your programmes. ?
we’re on Virgin cable at home so not sure if I would need to change to Sky .
thanks for the advice .Rob

No you don't need to pay Sky a penny as you use freesat. Our tv has it built in so its just a case of point dish in the right direction and tune in tv. Once tv tuned in we just move around from site to site, set up dish each time to Astra 2. Currently in the Alpes in France watching the Singapore GP.

The problem with a satellite that is attached to the roof is the proximity of trees on the site. A freestanding dish gives you more flexibility.

It might be slightly more flexible but there are lots of downsides as well. One is storage, especially in a motorhome. The main advantage of an automatic system is that you just press a button and its ready. OK you do pay for the privilege! We love our roof mounted dish but we do have a small backup aerial if the site landscaping gets in the way and there is no choice of pitch.

But the aerial only works in the uk David.
We loved the automatic satellite on the mh but it did mean choosing a pitch in the open rather than under the shade of a tree.
We have now gone back to a free standing dish 85cm, its been lovely this past 6 weeks putting the caravan in the shade (we had temps of 32c) but the dish in the open no problem getting signal even in Agde.

surely the post is about the 'advantages' of a roof mounted or freestanding sat dish?
.....not those of a MH or caravan.
either may be equipped with either type of sat system, can't they?

For very quick setting up I use two apps on my phone Satellite Pointer and/or Antenna Aligner. I agree having a stand alone dish can give greater flexibility to avoid nearby trees etc. We have a 60mm dish and that works down at least as far as the Dordogne in France.
