Bike Racks in Portugal

I drive a VW Campervan and use a tow bar fitted Thule bike carrier for bikes or storage box. I am touring Portugal next year and have read we cannot use this bike carrier as it extends more than 45 cms from back of van. Does anyone have any advice on this as to what the rules etc are?

    Have a look at the AA website which says you may not carry bikes on the back of a car, but you may carry them on the back of a campervan, motorhome or caravan provided they do not project beyond the width of the vehicle.
