Which insurance ?
As complete beginners to this, (picking our caravan up on 1st October), can anyone, if it’s allowed here, recommend good insurance companies, not necessarily cheapest please? Thanks in advance.

Go to Defaqto.com - an organisation which grades and rates all insurance products. They list 15 providers of caravan insurance which reach their five star standard.

Have you checked out the club’s own insurance?

+1. at least it will give you a starting point even if you find cheaper (like for like)

I use Saga - which are Defaqto 5* rated and, by all accounts, seem to have a good reputation for settling claims. They were considerably cheaper than this Club, albeit that European cover is an extra with Saga - otherwise, level of cover seems to be very similar.

If you'll want breakdown, factor that in to the package and if you want UK AND Europe cover (and CARAVAN based rather than car with caravan attached) try Safeguard (I always say this as it is still the best package for our needs at a fair price but if you aren't bothered about that sort of deal then that is down to you) Current renewal total was £200 for 2011 market value Sterling Europa 550 single axle and breakdown (£65, not available without their caravan cover)
Confused, com search will generate a list of possibles but, of late, they seem to be adding larger and larger excesses (which can be reduced and the premium is then re-calculated)
You'll need to tell your car insurance company about towbar fitting and any EU travel just in case they are interested (some state they don't need to know but better safe than sorry?)

We also use Saga. It's worth pointing out that their cover does indeed exclude Europe but I look at it as the CMC cover including it whether you need it or not. There are plenty of people who have this cover and never venture abroad. We tend to need it most years and Saga will add the cover, about £100 per annum, but on a pro-rata basis jntil your next renewal date.
In addition their Accidental Damage cover includes repatriation costs from Europe if the caravan is damaged whilst detached from the towing vehicle. When we left the CMC cover a couple of years ago repatriation costs were excluded and expected to be pickdd up taking out, what was for our circumstances, an expensive Red Pennant policy.
It really boils down to what you want from the insurance. If you do not intend to travel abroad then check out both this clubs insurance and the Camping and Caravanning Clubs (no need to be a member to qualify).

Caravan club insurance works well for me.

and me, haven't been with anyone else and yes I do check the yearly renewals price against others.

Any policy you buy should have DEFACTO five star cover. If it has not then it is short somewhere. If the information is not there assume they do not have it.
The clubs insurance is probably the best but can be expensive for some. SAGA, Caravan Guard and NFU Mutual are also worth a look.
I would not buy on price alone, despite what some people say all insurers are not the same.

We use Caravan Guard, and as we don't need "over there" cover it's about £100 cheaper than CC's. In fact it appears that it will be less the next time we renew as compared to the last time.
