I got my love of reading from a very early age, strangely enough from reading the local evening newspaper and apparently telling everyone they ought to buy what was being advertised eg soap powder. So I was told very early on not to believe everything I read! (My friend's brother's ambition was to edit the same local paper, which he did later on, obviously he didn't read the adverts quite so much as me. wink)

I'd give it a miss unless you like very dark material. I managed about 30% but then gave it up, and that's not like me.... I read War and Peace from start to finish!!wink

Anyone else out there a fan of John Connolly's "Charlie Parker" series?

Part detective story, part supernatural, I've enjoyed the whole series and the latest one "The Woman in the Woods" is just out. smile

Me, Me, Me!! Will have to tell our daughter that a new one is out, as she's a great fan too. Another series that must be read from the beginning to fully appreciate it.

Have you read the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly, or watched the Bosch series on TV?

Need a little light reading matter. A good murder mystery will do fine.

Shouldn't have said that. Just finished the new one by Craig Robertson called "The Photographer".

A very well researched and written crime thriller but disturbing content. A page turner nevertheless. If you haven't discovered him yet then start with "Random".

I see that his "Witness the Dead" is on Kindle for 99p, so I think I'll try that one.

I'm just reading the 3rd of the Tony McLean series by James Oswald, another series set in Scotland, this time Edinburgh. I can recommend them.

I've mentioned before that I often pick up a book at random from our local library shelves and the latest one was a real cracker - Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi. It's a murder mystery set around Monet's garden in Giverney, so plenty of mention of Monet himself and the other Impressionists, though they're just incidental to the story itself. It centres around the lives of 3 main characters and without giving too much away, the ending is astonishing and I'd defy anyone to predict it from what's gone before. Well worth a read if you spot a copy! smile

Thanks Moulesy, I am at a bit of a loose end at the moment and your review pricked up my interest....so I've just ordered the book secondhand on Amazon for £2.61. Don't often read crime fiction but will give it a go. I liked Giverny when I visited, it's also the only place my half French brother in law said I managed to pronounce properly! winksmile

Just finishing my favourite anti hero, Bernie Gunther, in Philip Kerr's "Greeks Bearing Gifts"

    Still as enjoyable as ever.

Have you read Black Water Lilies yet, brue. What did you think of it? Did you guess the ending?

I've just finished Stuart Macbride's latest Logan Macrae story, The Blood Road, rather depressing story line but told with his typical offhand humour. smile

Moulesy I was introduced to the Stuart MacBride Logan MacRae books earlier this year by friends in NZ. I have the latest with me on this trip. Gosh the stories are about dark subjects which I wouldn't normally even contemplate and certainly not for pleasurable reading 😲😲 but boy are they page turners. As you say offhand humour. I'm reading another charity book purchase not in my usual reads Jill Mansell Rumour has it, nice and light and fluffy. Perhaps I should have read then the other way round 😉

Unfortunately not Moulesy, I lent it to my BIL, who went to France, he's back at the moment and then off to France again this weekend so I might see the book again sometime in late July! I'll let you know what I think then, I hope. smile

Another recommended CT book by TDA is Black Diamonds which I have nearly finished and has been a cracking read!

I tend to read several books at a time, picking up the one I fancy as the mood takes me. I'm also reading a nice book called Modern Delight which is book of short musings by a variety of well known people about things that delight them, it came out at the time of the financial collapse and it's a bit of a spirit lifter (produced for charity funds.)

Great read isn't it! Certainly makes one want to visit the house, which we may well do during the last week of our next trip.

Love the Stuart MacBride books. There are a number of collections of short stories with Logan Macrae on Kindle which fills in more aspects of his story.

Am at present reading books by Martin Walker featuring Bruno a policeman employed by the mayor in a Dordogne town.  Bruno is ex-army and a local who has a way of doing his job which best suits the town.   A lot of eating and wine drinking references in these books as well as policing.   For me enjoyable easy reading.

OH and I are reading My Time, Bradley Wiggin's tale of his racing life between 2009 and 2016, which covers his early rides in TdeF, TofB, and some of his Olympic wins, and of course 2012, Tour win and London Olympics. Very interesting, great insights into cycling life and how they cope with the highs and lows and injuries. Charity bought, a present for OH from my Sister. Very cycling heavy of course, but interesting about his relationships with other riders, coaches and family.

Can't get the link to work, B2. Do you know when it's due to be on, or do I just have to troll through the Radio 4xtra i-player.

    Sorry link doesn't work!

For anyone else interested go radio 4extra schedule was on today, 20th, yesterday and day before. I find the BBC search facility on par with this site 😲😲. A friend left me message about repeat of 3 patter called Retribution - couldnt find it from the title 😲 so went through the schedule for a week or more, title was right and I've added it below.

Another great listen is Dangerous Visions Link tried linking slightly different way.

Also Hilary Mantel 15 Minute Drama - Hilary Mantel - Beyond Black, Colette's Story, Episode 2 - @bbcradio4 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qzjr6 tried yet another method with the link. Sorry don't know when they were broadcast but within the last month 4 or 4extra.

Sorry for suggesting talking books rather than reading ones 😉

Try this B2, I found it by googling Hilary Mantel Beyond Black Radio 4. It took me to the page which also has links to the re-broadcast on 4 Extra (right hand side of page.) To get the details on here I click right and copy the details across the top of the BBC page, then make a post and highlight the word LINK, then click the link symbol on here and paste the copy of the link in the box. If you just paste the details and don't use the link symbol it probably won't work.

Thanks brue. I did use the link symbol with everyone. I chose share option from BBC and copied to clipboard. Who knows???

Sorry folks I tried them all and just get bad request! But the listening is good if you find it 😂😂

Brue yours works, but extra stage to go through if you're actually wanting to share the link from the beeb.

I've sorted the other one LINK hope it works! It's called Dangerous Visions Resistance. I did it via Google but otherwise the same posting method. I'll check it out once I've updated the post.

😁 it worked. How bizarre 😉

Also I'm sure I did an edit to make it clearer but I don't think the edit worked. frown

Have been reading a library book by Gregg Hurwitz ‘Hellbent’ which kept my interest so will try and get previous books featuring the same character. Thriller type of book which features an ex US trained ‘hitman type character’.  Unfortunately, I often read books out of order and am wondering if he was an active 'hitman' in the earlier books.  I’ve also been told there is a new Lee Child ‘Jack Reacher’ book out next month which I expect I’ll read when the library have it.

Just started reading the "Tattooist of Auschwitz" on the Kindle. I never usually read love stories, but the descriptive narrative of life and death  for those held in the Concentration Camp, makes compulsive thought provoking reading.

Don't tell me the ending! I've got it on order from the library. It will probably wring me dry.

Just finished a James Lee Burke novel, The Jealous Kind, and fjnnily enough now reading one written by his daughter Alafair Burke, The Wife. Completely different.
