Portable WiFi router - worldwide usage?

I’ve read a few comments on here about folk using portable WiFi routers, to enable connection of multiple devices and also when local network is poor or non-existent. Seems these are particularly helpful when in Europe, where we do increasingly take our caravan.

Just now trying to sort which one to buy, (recommendations and reviews welcome) and an additional consideration came to mind. We also like to holiday worldwide (not always in caravan), and wondered if anyone knew if such devices (which make or spec) worked in such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA etc. I could then simply add a local data SIM,

I recall when one needed to ensure a mobile phone was tri-band or quad-band to work outside of Europe, so does this router also need to be so?

Has anyone used similar in other continents? We’re off to Australia in January, so that’s of particular interest, but NZ or Canada could follow in subsequent years.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Support-Extender-UK-TL-WR902AC/dp/B01NAYG15H/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1535564063&sr=8-1&keywords=portable+wifi+router&refinements=p_89%3ATP-LINK

I use one of these, works great for me, can be used anywhere I have not got a phone signal (only wifi) to use my phone as a hotspot, or indeed most places where there is free wifi and I want to put a layer of security between myself and the free wifi.

I originally bought it to share the single CC wifi subscription between all the family, but in all honesty, as most are aware, we have never yet found a site with good enough connections for it to be useful in the van.

Thanks CJ, but I don’t think this link is what I need. I want to be able to use the 4G phone signal to create mobile WiFi to be able to use google maps on a tablet as a live sat nav when driving.

i will have other uses, but I’m trying to avoid relying on poor hotel or coffee shop WiFi, which in any case, wouldn’t suffice for the sat nav use.

plus, of course able to,use in caravan in U.K. and Europe without having to rely on site WiFi.

Our daughter lives in NZ. I have an NZ sim card, Vodafone,  which I insert into one of my Samsung phones, I have s4 mini and an s5 so not the latest. I keep one with my UK sim and other with nz sim. Just buy pay-as-you-go top ups and often get additional data, texts or calls thrown in. You can buy the sims at the airport or from any diary, corner shop to you and me, or supermarket. Never had any issues.  Hope this helps.

Ps I know my daughter uses her nz phone, possibly her sim, in Oz without issue. I use data on phone as well as her or friends wifi. Often tgeir campsites have wifi and you get a unique login so secure and not using your data allowance.

Edit just reread your post, I use my phone as sat navigation if needed over there.

This is the portable Mifi Internet system receiver we now have  :-

    https://www. motorhomewifi. com/product/4g-huawei-e5577-mifi-window-mount-antenna/

Suitable for Caravans or Motorhomes or boats or passengers etc etc.

To date its been very very good & fast in UK & EU especially where there is the 4G satellite reception.

This is fully portable in that no holes need drilling or aerials fitting = warranty void. The small portable external aerial seems to be much superior to our previous mifi unit.

Found the supplier very helpful too and well worth paying perhaps the slightly extra supply cost for quick direct dial tech help from Yorkshire ! This is the Company that often do a talk presentation at Shows.

A quick call to them should confirm international use.

Caravanning abroad I always tether my tablet to the mobile phone where WiFi is not available on site, found it to be the easiest solution.
