An open invitation to thieves

Looking around the various caravan, and motorhome forums, it surprises me that there are people foolish enough, to openly advertise that they are away on holiday.

They will take pictures of themselves, parked up, on their 'pitch' clearly showing their car, caravan,  or motorhome registration number, and post it on the forums, saying "here were are at 'wherever', having a lovely time".

Or here's a picture of my motorhome, or caravan. Showing it parked on their drive (clearly where it is kept), with the Reg No.clearly visible in the picture.

By all means, post your holiday pictures, but be sensible, and obscure the vehicle registration number. Also, don't let the scumbags of this world know that you are off on holiday for 'x' weeks touring around Europe.

It really isn't 'rocket science'.

So what you are saying,is that the thieves go round where they live writing down all the registration numbers of caravans and motorhomes ,then peruse all the caravan forums looking to match the registrations of people who are away .

Some people give away far too much information about themselves on forums and social media in general.

It's one reason I refuse to use a forum that insists on users posting under their real names, such as C&CC. If you happen to read more than one forum, it’s possible to put the info together to track down a person’s home address. I know because, purely as an exercise to prove a point, I’ve done it.

    Be careful and stay safe.

Its when the local touring "scumbags" on their regular patrols notice the Caravan or Motor caravan is "missing" from a property, rather than noting a reg number on a social media siteundecided

" Or what about the staff at the storage site"

Not much you can do about that, other than trust their honesty.

That is very true, but publicising that you are about to head off on holiday, and displaying a picture of your motorhome etc, with the reg no. clearly visible, is not best practice.

But hey, I was only giving my point of view, based on what I had seen, not providing an open invitation for 'keyboard warriors' to jump in. Yourself excluded of course.

There are a great many 'what if' scenarios that we could apply, and yes, somebody may well be living there while you are away, but in many case there won't be.

"No, they had travelled up from London."

Can you substantiate that comment? Surely the only way that could be proved to be true would be for  those responsible being caught and prosecuted and that information being made public?  I would be interested to know how you came to this conclusion.

    Dave LS,

Sometimes it's not what you say but how you say it.

In my personal opinion your post was condescending using terms like "it's not rocket science"

    Have a nice evening cool

Yes I can, as it was reported in the local (village magaziine) from information fed back by the local Communtity Policing unit.

The scumbags, had visited other local villages too.

My elderly next door neighbours suffered at the hands of this scum.

We have the Neighbourhood Watch - though privately we call her the Neighbourhood Witch. So far she has scared burglars as well as the rest of us.

The simple answer is no. Firstly, because because there is no valid reason, other than to satisfy your curiosity, and secondly. because it was some seven months ago, and I don't keep old magazines.

So it's just your word that all this crime originates from London?

    Yes.

I'm struggling to know where you are trying to go with this, other than acting the 'keyboard warrior', which doesn't fit with how I usually read your posts.

It would be interesting to see if national statistics could throw any light on this type of crime.

There was a case in the newspapers some years ago of burglaries from homes where caravans had gone off drives. This went on for some months. It turned out it was a local dustbin man feeding the info to a criminal gang. Also there are stories of insurance companies quizzing claimants about their FB activity. Perhaps looking for a way out of settling a claim.

As for criminals from elsewhere targeting areas, here in our local villages there was a spate of thefts of catalytic converters from cars. Every village was at either side of a dual carriageway and the people responsible came from a town at the other end of the county. They came and fast and left the same way.

So like Dave SL says, criminals are savvy, they are a step ahead of certain situations.

I'm not trying to go anywhere my friend, as I said your original post, I thought was sum what superior in the way it read?  FYI I live in London and take offence when someone suggest where I live is any worse than any other part of the country we now live in.  We may have our own problems with crime here, like other parts of the country, Suffolk included, but I'm sure burglary of empty households is comparable.

Key board warrior? I don't think I am? I like to think I only post on subjects I have an interest in, can help someone, have experience of, or just a valid opinion.

Not trying to dig you out just putting my view/opinion acrosscool

Definitely. Which is why I take the stance described in my earlier post. Keeping the real name out of forumland is a major part of it.
