Mayday mishap: Follow up.

A follow up to my "greased lowball" incident when calling out Mayday to assist at Cirencester park.

I think the story ended with my thank you to many, on here and on site, who helped me clean up the mess and get towing again.

I subsequently contacted the club to report the incident as I was concerned it could happen again giving rise to a potentially dangerous situation.

The response from the club was immediate. Within 24 hours I was contacted by the manager of insurance services who advised me of a number of avenues of complaint open to me but specifically urged me to make a formal complaint in writing to green flag. He gave me full details of where to write to and who to write to.

When I returned home a week later I did.

Mayday customer relations responded immediately. The day after I posted my letter I had a phone call. The guy had checked the facts and expressed great concern that the Alko stabiliser had been allowed to come into contact with grease. He has urged me to replace the pads, with Mayday meeting all costs, and further is popping a generous cheque in the post to compensate for my inconvenience, which will become a very nice contribution to my "justgiving" page for the charity that I run for.

It should not have happened, it did, and both club and Mayday have been exemplary in dealing with issue. Thank you to both.

    Shouldn't have happened and hopefully won't again. Win, win, all round then as it seems those involved will have learnt from this incident, OJ.

    Do Green Flag, or other rescue operators for that matter, carry degreasing fluid or similar for the purpose of degreasing a tow ball if a caravan with a stabiliser such as Al-ko or Winterhoff is to be hitched onto the breakdown wagon?    It's something I never thought about until I read this post.

    Great result Jen. Hope the emergency that you were heading towards had a similar "happy" outcome.

    We carry Auto Glym degreasing bottle with us as you never know when someone needs to pull you off a pitch if on a CL etc.etc.

    An excellent result and I would say quite right Mayday. I trust they are sending a reminder to all their agents.

    The man I spoke to at Mayday was most certainly putting this on the "emergency discussion" agenda with a view to having a reminder bulletin issued. 

    I do now carry "brake cleaner" with me. It doesn't take much room, I now realise that modern stabilisers are very sensitive to contaminants and will creak at the slightest rust or dirt spot, and not to trust the "technician".  A small spray of brake cleaner is a small price to pay.

    I have also had a nice reminder as to what a great community generally is the "camping" community and just how helpful the club can be. Reminder to make sure that my membership is renewed.

    A good result although it should not have happened. The moral is that before you let anyone tow your caravan make sure their tow ball is degreased.
