Club sites too expensive

Wow!
I pointed out a top quality site in Devon with an indoor swimming pool and spa for just over £17 a night and waited for the predictable response. And it wasn't long in coming .

I am sure most people on here can divide 51 by 12 and work out quickly how long in nights away it takes to get your money back?
or calculate the savings on ferries, use of CL's... or getting a free fitted towbar and electrics and accessories....
Not just about pitches?

It had no influence in my decision to join the club back in 1990, nor during the 20 years I remained a member, until giving up caravanning.
Now having returned, with a motor home, again, it had no bearing on my decision to re-join the club.

Whether I go over there at high season is my decision and I’m happy to go but discussions like this always need a little balance and often that’s not the case. Once you add travel/sickness insurance ferry costs and 2/3000 miles fuel it isn’t as cheap as some make out. My time over there costs on average between £4 or £5k. By using club sites, CLs and private sites for the rest of the year doesn’t come to half that cost.

Yes most sites have pools and cafe’s which is great if you don’t mind tiny pitches crammed in like sardines.
I have to speak as I find, and other than one site in Italy (4 others OK), pitch size/space in 6 other countries far exceeded my expectations. I'm sure they do exist in any country but are certainly not the norm.

Very good if an indoor swimming pool and a spa is what you're looking for on a caravan site.
Simply not for us, though, even at £17 a night. Don't know why you should disparage that as a "predictable response". I suspect we're not alone in what we look for in a site!

Yes I think the C&MC membership is still good value for money .With their many club sites ,excellent CL network and their affiliated sites, plus all the other discounts that you get.No matter what the prices are set at there will always be some people complaining that they are too expensive.

BTW I did not mention P&R, and the buses run up to 11:30 anyway.

Our measure of expensive or not is determined by a simple formula. Is the site ( any site ) per night more than a certain figure ? If it is then we find a cheaper one somewhere else ( anywhere else) unless we have a very very special reason for being in a particular place. At the moment, our threshold is £25 per night, therefore no site will get our custom if their per night price for us is above that figure no matter who owns or runs it.

"I suspect we're thinking of different posters!"
I don't usually 'suspect', M......
I noticed a few posts recently that threatened to published the 'list'...
I amused myself a while back matching to the Brian Singer characters.....pretty much a perfect fit

Good morning BB. I'm afraid I cannot get your link to load.
I was, for my own amusement, going to have a look and see if I could match the 5 or so Brian Singer characters .
On prices,--- Prices alone do not reflect either quality or value for money. CMC prices are high and their sites are mostly to a similar standard across their network, which on a scale of 1 to 5 ( one being terrible to 5 being excellent ) achieves IMO a very decent average score of 3. --- This, depending on one's requirements and lifestyle choices, may or may not represent good value for money.

This is why the Baltic Wharf site is still so popular, right in the City, by the water side, only been once, for 3 nights. But really enjoyed it.
The Club needs sites like this AND Rowntree in York. Shame that re-developement pressure is so strong against them.

In your opinion that is. How it scores is more dependent on what an individual wants. For my wants and requirements CC sites are, in general, first choice. I'm not sure hat you would class as a 5 pointer K

Ray, I agree....BW is a first class facility 'of its type'....it's essentially a city 'aire'....it's a car park with a decent toilet/shower block but in a wonderful location.
these are ten a penny 'over there' in just about every city and usually cost around €10 tops, not £30+......in fact, £35.90 in peak for two adults and a pitch....hmmmm

Baltic Wharf, Rowntree Park are what they are and there are several others within those distances to Access local Towns/villages and the majority are very popular most of the times they are open,so even if there were as "over there?" the prices in the UK would be on a par with those that are already in existance,no matter what some would hope for

Practical Caravan run a monthly review of sites in an area bar the last issue. I have looked at the costs of the private sites and averaging them out usually leaves the club just above average. There are sites that are cheaper and many that are far more expensive. If you want you can tour cheaper by risking standards but that is up to you.
In critcising the price you do have to look at the management structure of the cheaper sites In general these are smaller family run ones which can operate without the clubs overheads and as they are family they can often avoid the Working Time Regulations and give themselves an advantage that way.
In winter some of the bigger sites can offer very low rates well below cost to get people in hoping they will spend on site enabling them to recoup some of the losses on the pitch.
The club is not profiteering from its sites and they basically reflect the costs of running a high quality site under current conditions.
The only two commercial sites we have used this year were very similarly priced to club sites. We used one in York as Beechwood Grange was closed and the second because there was no club site in the immediate vicinity of where we wanted to be.
There is no such thing as free wi fi. The cost of installations can run into several thousand pounds. What free actually means is the site fees are higher to cover this.
