Good luck with your adventure.
if you get to Caen late at night then you can stop at Camping Riva Bella or Camping les Capucines. They will both be waiting up for you. After that you can have a look at Mont St Michel - the new Aire there is convenient - and then St Malo too if you have time. Then a couple of days in Nantes is always worthwhile - Camping Nantes has a Motorhome area and a tramway stop right outside the gate. How convenient is that ! And then on your way south.
Take care.

Another useful overnight after a late ferry is the Pegasus Bridge museum car park. You are then ideally placed for a visit after breakfast before continuing your journey.

Very useful books to have are the CMC 'Caravan Europe' volumes 1 & 2. Available, I believe, by order on here. Volume 1 covers France. Sites are listed alphabetically by nearest town or large village. If you work out on a map how far you want to travel before stopping you can then look up suitable sites. Each site in the book has been visited by a CMC member who gives directions and info. We've used these books for years (before internet) and would not go without them. good luck

Yes, Let them know you will be coming and the campsite will be open and waiting for you
Yes, there are immigrants in the town trying to board northbound lorries - but you don't have a lorry, do you, and will be going south, won't you.
Enjoy your adventure.
