I was pottering in the garden yesterday and I heard something falling from the large tree at the back of the garden and through the shrubs. It is easy to see through the shrubs at the moment, they look almost dead from the lack of rain. I saw a wood pigeon convulse on the ground a couple of times and then remain lifeless. By the time I got to it it was clearly dead. There wasn't a mark on it and it looked in prime condition. Could it have been a casualty of the heat? My max min thermometer recorded 35.9C yesterday in the shade.

Sorry for delay in replying Brue I believe they are small holly blue we have a couple of different whites and 2 gatekeepers I think. They flit so fast and sit with folded wings my Collins guide doesn't show every variety in closed wing form 😉

I was very saddened to read the Lancashire hedgehog trust had about 50% more than this time last year of abandoned babies. Link HERE

However I'm delighted to report we have at least 2 hedgehogs 😃 one small, but not a baby, and one very large. I have taken to ensuring food is always available in their converted breadbin home, as I checked one morning and some was left but by evening all gone. So we obviously have visits during the day. Not seen them during the day but their 'home' has plenty of cover except from the front. OH watched the smaller one the other evening appear from behind the shed trundle along behind the pot plants then over the patio. I suppose unless this weather really breaks I will have to get a hedgehog feeder in 😂😂  when we go away. We've deliberately got rid of any pots that require watering often as well as pets so as not to trouble folks 😂😂😂.

I love watching the birds bathing in the hedgehog saucer of water but do they waste it and make it dirty?  You bet

We have so many baby birds again I'm delighted 3rd or 4th broods I've lost count.

Good start at Barleywood, baby hedgehog, silver washed fritillary, green woodpecker, jay and a barn owl 🦉 and that’s before we step outside the gate

Had a real treat yesterday, the bird ringer phoned and asked if I wanted to accompany him whilst tagging the last Marsh Harrier nest of the year.  I had to think long and hard??????

It was really hard going getting to the nest and the result was 1 healthy male chick.

I have to state, I did not go anywhere near the nest!  The young are taken away from the nest whilst being tagged.

I had to hold the legs as he put the tags on and can vouch for the sharpness of the talons.

Hopefully I will see 'CA' flying real soon.

Who would have thought there would still be young in a nest in August.

The ringer has tagged 74 birds this year, in our part of Norfolk.

Lucky you Greylag. We have got the young golden orioles flying around early in the morning and calling lovely to hear and seeing them flying about, we have had quite a lot of swallows gathering and some days house martins so looks like they are on migration already in this heat here in the Lot.

Also a lot of butterflies which I enjoy plenty of fritillaries even the largest one called the cardinal much bigger than silver wash or dark green also this year has been good for the large wall and they are breeding in our field which we have not had before although it is looking very brown and crisp although the field scabious are in flower so the butterflies are feeding on them.

Had more black kites about here this year.

By all accounts above I reckon to claim the smallest, surprise visitor.

Bearing in mind that I live in suburbia, I found a small newt on the lounge floor the other day, measuring about 4cm in length.

Luckily I didn't tread on it and was able to get it back outside and hidden in foliage.

No, there is no pond in my garden, nor has there been for the past 40 yrs., nor in any of my neighbours gardens either.

Just back from a wonderful holiday in Brasil. (Not in the 'van!)

Fantastic birding in the Pantanal, I've long given up on photography, but here's a photo of a tanager on a feeder, taken with my phone.

    Lots!
Highlights for me included Great Dusky Swifts flying through the waterfalls at Iguaçu, Burrowing Owls at Paraty and Giant Otters in the Pantanal.
We saw lots of birds, everywhere, even in Rio.
A bit hectic at times, but had plenty of time for a rest on the long, boring flight home!

Just catching up after a trip to Greenland and Iceland. Top spots - snow bunting, arctic skua, humpback, minke and sperm whales plus lots of icebergs, some of the colours of which were incredible.

    Great photos, CY.

Popped into Leighton Moss RSB reserve this evening for a quick look round. Plenty of Black Tailed Godwits, Little Egrets, half a dozen Red Deer and a female Marsh Harrier, could also hear Bearded Tits but didn't manage to spot any.

A follow up to yesterday's post. Today we went back to the reserve ans I saw a pair of Great White Egrets and 3 Garganey from the Causeway Hide. The GW Egrets were a first for me so well pleased. It was wet and windy so not a lot of other birds flying round.

Had a stroll around Barrington Court, Somerset (Nat Trust) today and was amazed at the large very productive and well cared for fruit and veg area where they used a lot of flowers (pot marigolds etc) to attract pollinators.  It was especially noticeable that the apple/pear trees were really heavy with fruit with quite a lot on the ground probably dislodged by yesterday’s heavy rain.  Will try adding photo.

Took my 5 yr old Grandson to a local show whereupon he decided to donate all his pocket money (£5) which he'd saved over two weeks, in aid of the Shropshire Falconry Centre. He learnt so much about their work and more importantly, about wildlife and specifically owls. Long may it continue 😀

    Grand photos, OP.

We went for a walk along the Lancaster Canal near Lea, Preston this afternoon and saw 4 Grey Herons and a Kingfisher. Not able to get a decent photo of them unfortunately.

Thanks Nell.  I was checking my records and it was a year to the day that I last saw a Wryneck in the same area. I’m now wondering if it’s the same bird?

Today a red kite over the North Yorkshire Moors. At least I assume it was a red.  I worry for it! And a brambling.

I think, looked like a brambling but if it is it's a bit early in the season!

Sorry, I broke off during writing and meant to finish off with the above caveat.

Caught a glimpse of the Ortolan Bunting at Portsdown Hill yesterday.  No chance of photo as in bush and too distant.
