Best Way to go to Royan

We are preparing a trip to Royan Area and considering the best way to go with a caravan. Our problem is wasting a lot of time between stopping points. We have tried an overnight in Folkstone with an early ferry and then another overnight in the Nantes area. Likewise we tried a late night Portsmouth/Le Havre arriving early morning. Each time we are snookered with a late permitted arrival time meaning we stop off at an aire for a couple of hours. When we come back it is much the same. This year we stayed overnight in Le Mans on the way back and paid for two nights so we could leave the campsite in reasonable time to get the night Le Havre / Portsmouth ferry. Can you think of a better way to do this journey ( without changing to a motorhome)?

Sadly the best way is the dearest way. cry

Drive to Portsmouth for the 2045 departure to St Malo. Leave your overnight bag in your cabin and go for dinner and wine in Les Abers restaurant on board. Sleep well.

Arrive St Malo at 0815 and after a good breakfast drive 250 miles to Royan. It will take about six hours. The road is good and the only toll is 12 euros.  Lunch on the way is allowed !

    Take care.

Thank you for your response. Going seems to be the right solution however, returning is slightly more difficult due to it being a daytime sailing. Am I right in assuming a night's stop in St Malo will be needed?

Coming back on that route is more erratic, but at certain times there is one overnight sailing per week from St Malo back to Portsmouth  -  often a Tuesday night , but not all year round. The B/F timetable is on their website and you need to check it out.

You will spot one mistake in my first post too - it's a 2015 departure going south, not 2045.

No sure where you live but we like the Plymouth to Roscoff crossing if we are going down the West  (Atlantic) coast we like the overnight crossing going and the Sunday morning return.

I find the St Malo route good but it is very expensive compared to Plymouth as there are discount if you buy 4 vouchers, this might sound daft but its true it makes the ferry cheaper.

When we went to Royan, we sailed from Poole to Cherbourg. We arrived at Cherbourg in the evening, and stayed at a campsite just outside the town. We set off the next morning, around 9ish, and arrived at Royan around 7pm. I didn’t race, and we had a couple of breaks, including a lunch stop. I also didn’t use any toll roads. From Royan we travelled on to different regions, but made my way back to Cherbourg, again taking an overnight stop just outside, before the morning sailing.

Thanks again for the info. We have booked the ferries from Portsmouth to St Malo and will stop at a municipal site in St Malo to be ready for the return ferry. As we only do about 250 miles maximum in a day this precluded us using the Cherbourg route and Plymouth is too far from Buckinghamshire.
