Heading to the Dusseldorf Caravan and Motorhome show for the first time. Is there anyone who knows this route that could give a recommendation for a nice place to overnight perhaps halfway? We plan to do the journey over 2 days with one overnight stop somewhere worth spending a few hours sightseeing. Looking more aire type stop than campsite. Any help appreciated

Without wanting to be rude, may I ask why the Portsmouth to Cherbourg  route when the Portsmouth to Le Havre route would save you 100 miles of driving in each direction and give you more choices for your overnight stop - perhaps at one of the historic Belgian cities?

My thoughts too ET, in fact I would have thought Dover-Calais would have been the best for Dusseldorf.

We are going to do Dover - Calais and then Ostend, Gent, Antwerp, Eindhoven and stay somewhere around Roermond.  Unless you have a motorhome and stay on the temporary show site, the campsites in Holland, IOHO, are better than the ones round Dusseldorf.  We have stayed once at Lorick and several times at the Unterbachersee (Campingplatz Sud).  Both get very crowded during the show.  If we needed to be near the show, we would go for the Unterbachersee which is the better of the 2 sites (our opinion only - others may disagree).  The only drawback is that you cannot keep your car next to the caravan and have to park it outside in a designated car park.  Having said all that, we haven't booked anything yet so may have to be flexible in our plans.

We will be staying at the show site. So I am looking for a recommendation for a stop halfway between Cherbourg and Dusseldorf

    That explains it, thank you.

Amiens will almost be your halfway point and if you have time the city centre is an interesting place to visit, but other than at the campsite there I don't know what Motorhome parking is available.

sorry to be the party 'pooper' but we attended last years show, quite ineradicable springs to mind. (sorry to say, but don't think we'll be attending the Birmingham show for a while). And can see why its the largest in Europe, in fact to fully appreciate it, i would suggest 2 full days would be order of the day.

There and back - we actually, left the caravan at home on this occasion and got a 3 night hotel/euro-tunnel package - Friday night plus weekend package. We stayed in a super hotel less than one minutes 'walk' from the railway station and just 15 minutes in an air-conditioned half empty train which took us right into the heart of the Caravan Salon - absolutely perfect.

Having 'done' the sums the additional fuel required for towing, 2 sites need, one each way, the additional time waiting to cross with the caravan and sorry to say you 'do' wait longer than when travelling solo, all in all this way worked out considerable cheaper' - not to mention the speed aspect. sorry to say we still have to work..... for a couple more years, anyway.

And as a real bonus, we discovered, in typical German style, tourism is big and if you stay within the state, public transport, trains, buses were 'free' so no driving in Dusseldorf allowed me to sample German food with the odd cold beer included, with no worry of compromising my driving licence - BIG bonus!

In conclusion, the driving was simple, the hotel was good, show ineradicable AND we saved on the entire experience. And the down side? - we were back in time for work Monday morning.

would have added photos but larger than the allowed 500kb -

UK shows will never quite be the same again!!

Makes a lot of sense, making my original post useless - sorry.  I would agree with Eurortraveller and I would definitely stop for the night in France.  Southern motorway through Belgium (A15) doesn't have much in the way of campsites unless you are in the Ardennes which, looking at the map, would be off your beaten track.

There are two motorhome aires near the centre of Amiens, both free and both close to the centre which are ideal for an overnight stop and a look around the beautiful cathedral and area. If you have the Camper Contact App they are both listed on it and have decent reviews.
