hi all.

Im looking for summer holiday recommendations in France somewhere a bit warmer than the UK. I was thinking La Rochelle - Royan area but happy to consider further afield.

Time of year: summer holidays (July August)

duration: 2 weeks

In tow: 6 year old

likes: beach

enjoy: cycling (flat not mountains)

optional: pool

not bothered: evening entertainment/ kids club.

I would love any recommendations for me to book 2019!

thanks

Perhaps one of the beach front sites on Oleron island such as Camping le Suroit .

I know I'm not helping with an answer but that's a fair old tow from South Yorkshire for a fortnight.

Having said that we've just returned from a week in a gite near Saumur and another near la Rochelle and it was beautiful. Enjoy your trip.

Try La Garangoire.  Been twice.  Family owned and activities for a child of 6 are great plus free child care when you eat in the restaurant.

My teenagers loved it and had to prise them away from the site during the day. Was a CC site but you have to book direct now

South Yorkshire to Portsmouth 250 miles

Overnight ferry depart at 2045 to St Malo, arrive at breakfast time

St Malo to Oleron 250 miles.

It's an easy journey that way, but not cheap.

I know it is - 775 miles each way. Having said that currently had a wet week in SW wales and that was 325miles each way.

    Could recommend https://www.yellohvillage.co.uk/camping/les_grands_pins.

Took a three year old there.  Great swimming facilities.  Bike hire to ride through cypress woods and further.  Good eating if you want a break from cooking.

Walk over the dunes to the vast beach.

It's a great memory for us. smile

The sea from South of the Gironde Estuary (Royan) to the Spanish Coast is only suitable for surfers and exceptionally strong swimmers due to the currents. The freshwater lakes just off the coastline through the Landes are however fantastic in that they provide warm safe bathing and shaded or sunny access to the water. The terrain is cycle friendly and the numerous campsites range from cl type farm sites to full-on holiday clubs.

The more sheltered beaches of the Gironde around Royan are good. There's a zoo at La Palmyre, Roman amphitheatre at Saintes, and booze at Cognac. It's a reasonable day's tow from Caen/St Malo. What's not to like.

NB. Keep an eye on small children. It's easy to lose one on the vast expanses of sand. embarassed

We'd like to suggest Brittany and the delightful Quiberon. There are several campsites out at the point with beaches suitable for children. We camped at the municipal last September and again this May. The other sites might match your requirements having additional dining and recreational facilities. There's an abundance of mainly flat cycling routes along the coast and in to town. There's also lots to visit in the area.

Agree with ChasnCath about how good Brittany is.  We wandered along the beach at Raguenes Plage today - didn't inspect the campsite there but it gets good reviews - and that stretch of coast is great for 6 year olds - we have one with us. All going back tomorrow for lunch at the beach cafe by the little headladland called Pointe de Trevignon.

I'd go for Brittany as well, been visiting for nearly 30 years especially the south coast and only had one week when the weather was a bit dodgy.

Some really great sites with pools and flumes, lovely beaches and loads to see. Can recommend Les 2 Fontaines at Raguenes Plage. Anywhere around Carnac. And you won't go far wrong with campsites from the Castels group.

I too would recommend Britany.  Not only is it a shorter drive but it offers lovely beaches and rockpools and there are loads of excellent sites.
