Hi, Spent a bit of time this morning checking ferry options for late August/September, and came up with the prices shown below, which include 4 CAMC vouchers costing £87. To get these prices, first add the 4 site vouchers to basket, then select 'add a ferry crossing'. The outbound dates used were between 27th Aug and 2nd Sept, returning 6 weeks later. Remember, the prices include the 4 vouchers

Harwich morning sail - return Hook of Holland afternoon £283.40

Portsmouth afternoon sailing - Caen morning return £274.80

Dover - Calais DFDS varied but with outbound before 9am and return after 9am £285.80

Dover Calais P+O both sailings before 7am £293.30

Poole morning sail - return afternoon sailing £296.80

Poole morning sail - return Cherbourg overnight inc cabin £358.80

These prices are for 2 adults with a 12m car+caravan

Hope it helps someone

Some of these figures are a bit high I thought, so checked out the Dover Calais return with P&O, using the dates as above.

The price I get is £168.00 for ferry without vouchers so there is no discount on that crossing ie no incentive to pay over priced rate of vouchers.

Some of the biggest saving made is as AD said with the Portsmouth Caen route and also I've found the Plymouth to Santander or Roscoff route gives big saving if taking vouchers. I see no point in taking vouchers if they do not discount the ferry as Acsi rates are much cheaper.

Tammygirl, you just bet me to it. Looking at Eurotunnel prices for Peedee (whcch was £323 without vouchers) and also came up with £168 for DFDS Dover Calais without vouchers sailing at 07.40 each way on 30th Aug and returning 12th Oct.

As has been said before, the crossing you choose, has to suit your destination to work out best for a number of reasons, including value.

The cheapest I can find for Plymouth//Roscoff for those dates is £335 (with vouchers) but if the tunnel is £323 (without vouchers) that's going to save me a long drive to get there from Cornwall.  embarassed

We just paid £144 out Friday 14th @20:15 back 3rd Sept 10:45.  The site vouchers do not make any difference to the prices on the Dover Calais route only the longer crossings.

Yes AD, we have never found western routes to be viable for us, always well over £500 and Harwich although less than 20 miles away wastes a day for us.

The longer crossing always seem to be the most expensive for motorhome owners. Thanks for the Tunnel price Largerorwine.

Same here, I try every year, but get similar prices, so always end up back on the tunnel with Tesco voucherswink Usually book late afternoon, stay at a nearby site "over there" on arrival, ready for an early start next morning.

I do  the same InaD  but I don't very often look at the alternatives. The Tunnel suits me fine. It's a good few years since I last used a cross Chanel ferry.

We are away from Plymouth to Roscoff in two weeks time on the flagship, Pont Aven - leave home at at 6.30 pm. and boarding from 7.30 pm. and so I think we will be in the smart waiter service La Flora restaurant for dinner soon after that.

The pianist will be playing in the bar alongside,  so we will probably have a night cap and listen for a while, then early to bed - no, not bunks with one of us up a ladder - proper beds.

In the morning Club Voyage members get free breakfasts, and on the way back they get free day cabins - the journey is  no hardship at all. And then the motorways from Roscoff to the crossing of the Loire are all toll free. So some advantages in living down here.

We are the same with Hull crossing, no night halt needed, bit more expensive for the car+caravan than the MH was but still worth it compared to driving down to Dover and 2 night halts 2 lots of fuel and a loss of 2 days holiday.

We did Plymouth to Roscoff last September and really liked it, still 2 night halts (although we could do it with just 1 if needed) and 2 lots of fuel but a nicer journey and nicer ferry as we had the Pont Aven.

Was thinking of going Plymouth - Santander, Roscoff Plymouth, next April but have rethought it and will now do it next September when we have more time. So it will be Plymouth -Roscoff, then Santander/Bilbao - Plymouth/Portsmouth. The Spring trip we will only have 7 weeks due to other commitments and want to spend some time down the foot of Spain and don't want to rush it. So somewhere else for Spring and then Spain next Autumn when we will have 12 weeks to play with.

AD, Phil has a fancy to revisit Bavaria, Austria and Northern Italy been a very long time since we have been there.

Croatia sounds nice so does Slovenia so you never know, just fancy taking things slowly with the caravan rather than keep moving every couple of days. We tend to do a tour rather than have an end destination in mind, where we would spend weeks in one place. Thinking 5-7 days then move.

taking things slowly with the caravan

Have you gone back to tugging TG?  If so what made you want to make the change back?  Mrs T asked the other week if I would ever go back, of course you can never say never but at the moment we love the MH over the caravan.

MichaelT, yes gone back to caravan, pick it up in a couple of weeks, picked up new tow car today smile

When we bought the MH we always said that we would go back to a caravan at some stage, didn't think it would be this early (6 years) however with one thing and another we decided to jump this year.

Have enjoyed the MH but we don't do aires as we prefer sites, we don't really like 1 nighter's unless prior to the ferry.

We've tried doing our sight seeing en route but didn't like that either. Found it a pain at times trying to find somewhere to park the MH and not keen on leaving it with all your belongings in it.

Really missed not having alternative transport, we do have an A frame for my car which we used in Europe for a couple of years but then started getting stopped by police which just takes the shine off your holiday.

Bought a big scooter/trike and towed that for 2 years but then OH hurt his shoulder and couldn't manage the bike with us both on it.

Lots of little niggles with the van 'damp' being the main issue 3 times now, so when we saw a new caravan that we both liked we gave it serious thought.

We had thought of changing to another MH but not keen on the 'continental' style but did like the idea of a garage to keep everything in. New MH would have required considerable cash injection which we were not prepared to part with.

Decided to ask several dealers what our MH was worth against a caravan and was pleased it wasn't  as bad as we thought. Our dealer was very generous and gave us a good price, the new caravan has everything on it that we wanted, just need to have a motormover fitted.

So we decided that fate was telling us the time was right laughing

Good luck hope it all works out.  The things you do not like about a MH we love (Aires, touring round, one nighters s every day is then a new adventure etc.) smile, pity about the damp but it was a UK van, one of the reasons after 3 damp U caravans we went for a continental model.

Just checking ferry prices for my visit to Germany in late September and I was surprised at ferry prices.  These are one way prices as I'm not sure of return crossing date

Harwich to Hook (day time) £73 for a 7.5hrs crossing

Dover to Calais (day time) £114 for just over an hours crossing.

I checked both as I didn't know if I would be starting from home or Hampshire.

    Unbelievable really.
