It is quite common to be offered a “superior” pitch for an additional fee (lakeside, larger, etc.) but as it is out of season anyway we have found that there has usually been plenty of choice amongst the standard pitches.

Now that ACSI is so popular and very profit driven I wonder what its future is. Site owners pay around £1000 per season (I think) and there are some areas where nearly every site is ACSI (Millau is a good example). So, if the site owners got together they could all drop out of the scheme but still offer off-season rates.

We had the same experience at La Pescheur at Roquebrune Sur Argens as did other Brits staying at the same time all of us saying we will not return to that site. Many empty pitches and one part of the site not even shown on the site map we were given and photos not showing the 'tatty' side of the site. Very disappointing having driven a long way to find scruffy unkempt pitches with a forgotten about air.
