French Terrestrial TV

Hi,

We don't really miss British TV while we are away. We've tried the satellite stuff and realised we didn't really watch it. We take a couple of DVD's for rainy days but that's it. However, what we do enjoy (or did!) was brushing up our French listening to French Terrestrial TV with Croissants and Coffee for breakfast. The news, weather, all that stuff. A couple of years ago, the French changed their TV system and our TV no longer picks up the channels through our aerial. I understand, this is because it doesn't receive the HD signal.

Does anyone know of a conversion "box" or terrestrial receiver available. Or, better still, the rules on buying a TV in France? Is there a licence system like UK or can one simply pop in Geant and buy one? And, the standard Bailey aerial - is that compatible with the HD terrestrial signal?

Look forward to a helpful response. Thanks.

From reading about Télévision Numérique Terrestre (TNT) it just seems your television must be capable of receiving HD signals. A lot of small TV sets are only HD ready so I imagine you would need an HD set top box as you would in the UK. However if you have a full HD TV, like an Avtex (probably other brands as well) then the built in receiver should be OK. From what you say you don't have an HD TV so a set top box or new TV would have to be purchased.

OH suggests buying a terrestrial box over here and just plug into the back of your tv cheaper than buying a tv also there is a license but it is built in to the taxe d'hababition  system like UK council tax.

    Hope this will help.

HD ready TVs are capable of receiving FRench terrestrial channels.

I have recently returned from the Charente and my Philips TV that I bought in 2011 received over thirty TV channels.

Virtually all TVs are multi standard and you can check this by going to installation and see the country you have to choose before beginning the installation.
