Would appreciate any information on paying for road tolls for car and caravan in Portugal please. I read somewhere that you cannot pay cash which seemed odd.

Many thanks.

Shortly after entering  Porugal on a major road (motorway) you will be directed off the road to a place where you can have your number plate/Credit Card linked and from then on it is automatic.  Don't panic if you have gone several ks before you see the signs, they are obvious!

Just Google 'Portugal Tolls' and it is all there; it will sound complex but isn't.  I would not chance it by not paying as it is common now for the fine to follow you home with extra fees!

Thanks both. Being a long-term user of Sanef tags in France, I have decided that a three week visit to Spain and Portugal will be worth getting the new Spain/Portugal tag. I understand that if you get it wrong, the fines can be relatively enormous. We will be using the A22 into Portugal so the electronic tolls will apply to us.

Just after crossing the Guadiana river into Portugal, you will come to a service area with a tourist office and a registration point for your vehicle. It has special lanes for foreign registered vehicles. Drive up to the APNR camera and register your credit/debit card in the machine - all done!

The N125, the alternative non-toll road, is said to be the most dangerous in Europe!
