Southport Air Show
We are at Southport for the Air Show and any advice regarding whether you need to buy tickets or is the view from site good enough would be appreciated, If the latter is true I wonder if the atmosphere "inside" the venue is worth the extra??

You cant, they lock it down, ticket or you are not getting in! Marine drive is a ticket area. I would think you would get a decent view from the site but standing on the beach wall is a superb view.
In fairness it is worth getting a ticket and you can then go to all the non flying events on the beach. Southport is a really good show, the long long beach and no buildings past the fly zone means the come in really low and fast.

We had a couple of combat jets do a very low flypast along the invasion beaches while we were at Arromanches last week. Didn't half make me jump.

You can see most of the flying displays from on the sand dunes by walking straight out of the main gate and across the road into the dunes. 'Security' might try and stop you doing this but we managed an excellent view although you're in the best position on the beach. You can see some of the flying from the site but it's not the best place to see the show. Buying a ticket enables you to go onto the beach and peruse the various sideshows/flight simulators, etc.
All in all, it's a great show.
Another thing to be aware of is that The Esplanade closes to traffic during the show so driving in and out of the site is a no no. You usually get a 'permit' when you arrive at the site to enable you to get in but there's usually no vehicular movement on show days. We couldn't leave the site until the Monday morning.

Whereabouts are you starting from Wedgy? Is the closure of the A59 at Blubberhouses affecting your route?

Hi Jill we are travelling from Featherstone West Yorkshire via M62 so the A59 isn't on pur route. I note that the CMC directions have altered since our last visit to Southport which was Quite a while ago hence my request for suggestions for the best route.

Whichever way you go Wedgy, you'll end up going across country once you leave the M62/M60/M61 (Chorley) - through Euxton - Croston - Bretherton. Much of the journey on the A and B roads is long and winding through the villages until you pick up the A59 after Bretherton.
The only other issue then is the VERY undulating coast road (Marine Drive) which needs a very slow stretch.

M62 stay on until J10, onto M57, stay until end.
New road A5758, follow Southport signs.
Onto A565, chose a route into Southport, I use the coast road, left first turning after RAF base. Follow the coast road
As you arrive at the site the road Esplanade is now closed at the beach end, you have to continue straight on to the next island turn right and then right again.
Major road all the way.

Depends what sort of pitch you prefer. The new part has no real planting yet and is fairly open to 'sea breezes' whilst the old part pitches are of varying sizes. There are no non-awning pitches in the new part.
