We are always on EHU pitches so it goes on when we set up and stays on until we leave .

In very hot weather as now or South of France we leave it off at night to keep the inside temperature down, otherwise it is on all the time.

On full time. Why would you switch it off?

If I'm off-grid, I turn on as required. Seems little point in using gas just to maintain a temperature. I must confess that I am not as abstemious when on hookup.

On for hour a day at most, for a shower. It's all we need. We boil a kettle for meal time drinks, residue from that washes pots. Our MH is out with us in the day.

Same with caravan. It's an old water heating system, so we treat with care, and turn off if we don't need.

We are same at home, got power shower, dishwasher, auto washer, we just don't need hot water most of time, it's on for an hour if we are washing vehicles, fancy a bath occasionally. No children in house helps as well, grubby little beastslaughing

We tend to use ours on a when required basis. The boiler is under fixed bed and does create residual heat which we can do without when the weather is warm.

I turn ours on for an hour or so in the morning and again in the evening. I must admit it's more out of habit than anything else, not really anything to do with power saving and I know we've had the whole discussion before about whether it's more energy efficient to leave it on or turn it on and off as required.

Ours is left on all the time. As others have said I let the thermostat do the work.

At least it will be when I've forked out £280 for a new Alde PCB which has failed☹️ Hope it wasn't leaving it on all the time that did for it.🤔

yes we keep it on all the time and let the thermostat do it's thing, Also with the heating in winter as I hate coming back to a cold van, although it's usually on the 1kw setting and 40C for water if we are out.

why? it is more convenient and I believe it takes more energy to keep reheating water from cold than keeping it at a set temperature

If touring overseas it never gets switched on, we use the sites facilities, likewise with Club sites in the UK. But Cl's we turn it on and let the stat control it, but find because the hot and cold pipes are routed together we tend to get warm water through the cold tap initially.

We always turn the hot water off when we are out walking and overnight too as I prefer things turned off when I am not around ( if it's practical to do so) , plus the bed gets warm when its on which is nice enough in winter, less so in summer. In our van everything is shut off automatically when you are moving in any case.

I’d say a fair amount of folk turn their’s off when leaving site. I know this because a large percentage of people drain their boilers when leaving, yep, grass pitch wrecked. I have 28 like that so far this year😫😂

On except in hot weather where, without air con, we do all we can to keep the 'van cool.

not sure about this at all. Firstly the energy needed to heat one Kg of water by 1C is the same at home or on site. Secondly I think my caravan is as well insulated (grade 3). Once warned up I sit in my shirtsleeves and comfortably warm at the 1Kw setting with the thermostat working away (I know it does as I feel the blown air under my feet) keeping the van easily at 20C.  I know that a 1kw fan heater in a similar sized room at home is not as warm.

I won’t hijack the thread and mention how many Motorhomers drain their tanks on the pitch early in the morning before leaving, that happens a lot too. ( I get up early and walk the site most mornings, you’d all be very surprised what’s to be seen,)

Apparently dogs can have a  very similar effect on the grass so it may not be all due to irresponsible draining of boilers by caravans or motorhomes.

I wasn't doubting this in your experience but on other sites/instances blame may be just laid at the wrong 'door'. In fact I recently pitched next to a dog owner who had a watering can at the ready just in case his young puppy 'performed'. Now that's what I call responsible action. Have also pitched on those where the smell is a give away mind!

Neither the water heater or the heating has been on in the last 7 weeks while we have been away and we were on EHU all the time.

We only really use the water heater when on a non facilities site, we then have it at 40c unless we are about to have a shower, we turn it up to 60c to give it a boost then back down to 40c.

If the weather is hot then we turn it off once dishes done in the evening so it can cool down before bed.

That’s a common misconception. When you heat the water you can feel the heat escaping from the boiler, in fact, as OH sleeps over it she can definitely confirm! You are wasting energy by heating water when you don’t need it although if you are on mains hook-up it is more convenient to leave it on.

Funny how so many people believe it is better to leave heating on all the time at home rather than switch on when needed. Suppose you heat your house up in the morning then go off to work leaving it on. Think of all that energy wasted through walls, windows, roof etc. After all, that’s why central heating systems have timers.
