    It would be much easier to define if the Americans hadn't bastardised our language - and there's no animosity or hatred intended here before anyone jumps on my back!

    Association football is a game played by two teams of eleven players with a round ball which may not be handled during play except by the goalkeepers. In America, this game is called soccer

    Football has other variants; ie Rugby football, Gaelic Football, American football, Australian rules.

    As defined in the Collins dictionary;

    "Any of various games played with a round or oval ball and usually based on two teams competing to kick, head, carry or otherwise propel the ball into eachother's goal or territory etc"

    So the Soccer World Cup is for the Americans - the rest of us know it as the Football World Cup - but to be correct (and maybe we're our own worst enemy?) the word "Association" should not have been dropped?

    Other definitions and dictionaries are available surprised

    Most probably an age thing, the closer you are in age to the day it was invented the more chance you insist on it being called football, the further away the less chance of calling it football. Most youngsters call it soccer(that I know). Me?, I don’t let it bother me, geez I’ve even heard it called footy😱😱. I know, I know if only capital punishment was still available😤😤

    What has been notable is the sly, cynical foot treading, scraping the ankles and calfs. None seem to be punishable.

    Just goes to show if you get a good referee, backed up with technology, the cheating will be punished and the villains will eventually stop their cheating antics

    Well done England

    Dear Lord of the Round Ball Game, it's been a long time, we have suffered, we know humility, our fans are behaving, we are trying hard, please bless the boots of Harry Kane and the lads, just a couple more weeks.......thank you!

    Thank you Lord of the Round Ball, Germany out is good. Without presuming too much, could you also see fit to consider saying goodbye to Brazil as well........

    Didn't watch tonights' game, but was it a case of "After the Lord Mayors show?" or, as someone pointed out to me, a game which neither side wanted to win???

    Don't  think  so,  JR  --  more  like  both  sides  using  the  match  to  give  players  who  have  not  yet  been  used  a  chance  to  display  their  talents  &  achieve    a  little  'match  fitness'.

    Like most Scots, I'm hoping that England plays really well and makes it all the way to the final.  Should be entertaining.

    Ha Ha, we are all part of the UK and although the small countries like Ulster; Wales and Scotland have little chance of qualifying,  we are still happy to support England all the way to the final. wink  What's wrong with that ?, it's called sportsmanship. wink
