Hi we have the opportunity to acquire a petrol Kuga with 1.5t petrol engine 180bhp 240nm torque and auto box.

Was wondering if anyone tows with one and if you all believe it would tow our 1440kg sterling Eccles easy enough without problems. Obviously bhp is plenty but the torque figures could be better?

thanks.

We had via a "mistake" a 2ltr petrol  Kia Sportage and although on paper it was powerful enough,it had no low down grunt of a diesel and 19mpg  and when towing ,we have now a 2ltr diesel of the same car and it is fine  with 29-31mpg when towing

    Ps they are both automatics

In December 2017 we replaced our diesel Skoda Yeti with a 1.5 150bhp petrol Kuga manual 6 speed to pull our Sprite Alpine 4 and are perfectly satisfied with the result.  It returns between 20 and 24 mpg when towing depending on terrain, but as we've only just done a total of 2000 miles in her she's still loosening up and I'm expecting the mpg to gradually improve, though obviously not to diesel levels.  We took the decision that now we're no longer working and not using the car every day we would have more problems keeping the dpf in a diesel healthy as most of our mileage is local running around we are better served with a petrol motor.

To date we have towed over 700 miles with her and she is proving to be an excellent tow car with plenty of power to pull our Caravan.

I have just change to a Kuga titanium diesel . Automatic I’m finding it very heavy on fuel . I would like to do a test on miles per gallon / litre but not sure how to work this out .

I am more than happy with how it tows, it does tow very well though .

Norab.  Fill tank to very top.  After say 200 miles refill to very top and make a note of miles covered.  Divide miles by fuel used and that is your answer.  Example 200 miles used 6 gals = 333 mpg.  (1 gal = 4.546 ltr)

Well spotted lornalou though I'm sure I typed the decimal point obviously I didn'tfrown.  Yes, of course it should be 33.3 mpg.

JVB I have never got anything like your MPG from my 2ltr Sportage when towing. More like 24-25 maybe I drive too hard.

Norab please let us know your results as the Kuga is on my short list and my partner will be using it as her run around.

This may or may not be useful to you. We bought our 2.0L TD (180) Mk 2 Kuga last September. On average we get around 35 mpg around town (solo), 25-28 mpg towing (mixed) and on a motorway keeping to around 60 mph we got 52 mpg (solo) using cruise control. It pulls the caravan easily.

These numbers won’t be relevant if you have a heavy right foot wink

My 2.0 tdi Kuga is a great tow car. 28-32 mpg depending on what I'm doing with my right foot. But most caravans were towed by petrol cars 20 years ago. 180BHP? just go for it! Derek & Sue have the right idea.

Thanks everyone for their input. In the end that deal wasn’t right for us. We average 15-20k miles a year and the fuel costs would have been quite a lot.

Have ended up choosing. A VW Sharan 2.0 150bhp diesel that we think will fit the bill for us. Towing capacity of 2200kg so more than enough for our 1440kg tourer.

We want a Kuga but not really a diesel. Does anyone run a petrol version? Advice wanted.
