Overnight stop from Calais

I'm finalising my route for trip to Switzerland and southern France.  We're using the tunnel this year and travelling from North West England on a Sunday.  We need an overnight stop around the Arras area - about 70 miles from Calais.  Expecting our arrival time to be around 8pm.

I was looking at either La Paille Haute or possibly the municipal at Plouvain - wondered if anyone could give me some feedback?

We have stayed at La Paille Haute, although some years ago. I think they are used to people arriving fairly late although its always worth e-mailing them. Some pictures of the site here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_la_paille_haute.htm

La Paille Haute is a good overnight stop as David has said. We have stayed there a couple of times. It's about 70 miles from Calais so about a couple of hours from the ferry at the most.

Because it is quite close to the autoroute the site is a very popular night halt with many people particularly our Dutch friends, consequently it can get very, very busy during late afternoon and evening. Not many, if any, pitches are marked so they tend to cram outfits in where they can including on the roadways. David's suggestion about booking is a good idea. The site reception staff speak good English if your French is not that good. All in all a good night halt with decent facilities.

A bit off-topic, but I have to say DK, that’s an excellent blog/journal (whatever you want to call it) you have put together. I may well visit France next year, so it will be a very useful resource 👍

La Paille Haute is a good bet. A nice spot  and easy to get to.

It’s a regular for us also.  About 2 hours from Calais and popular with the Dutch. ACSI, so cheap out of season. Going out we tend to use the site at Guignicourt - about 3 hours just off of the Autoroute close to Reims. Overpriced unfortunately.

Just to be clear, do you mean arriving in France at 8.00 pm, or arriving at the site?  If you don't arrive in France until 8.00 pm then I would find a site as near to the ferry as possible.  Some sites stop admitting new customers, sometimes as early as 7.00 pm, so do make sure that any site you're interested in will take later arrivals.

We arrived at Vivier Aux Carpes near St Quentin at 9.15 pm but I phoned ahead from Dover. Most site receptions close around 7 pm.

    Freddy and Cartledge

Very kind of you both. Unfortunately this is the second year we have been unable to get abroad so no new reports just yet!
