Hi everyone

We've just been checking out possible motorhome stops in or around Laon and, besides the designated aires, there seem to be quite q few parking spots or car parks that can be used also.  See below. Has anyone used any of these? Did it feel safe?

Cheers

Jane & Ian

A lot of years ago we used the municipal site at Laon, which was a typical municipal site........... and felt perfectly safe.  However, it's too long ago to rely on so I looked at recent reviews on UKCS and it scores 7 out of 10, with most people saying it needs a little work.  It felt perfectly safe when we stayed there, and there are no comments about problems there.

    Hi ValDa

We will be arriving well after 21.00, I suspect, and so too late for a campsite. we have spotted various aire-campingcars (both in Laon and in towns further south) but also spotted the above comments for using car parks in the town - which might be more convenient.

We are really looking to see whether any CMC members have stayed in an aire or car park in Laon and what we can learn from their experience. To date we have only used village aires and this feels a little different

    With thanks

    Jane

not sure what your French is like but both these are listed on www.campingcar-infos.com the first one is allowable overnight parking area (no photos) but googlemaps reveals its just a short row of 5/6 spaces alongside the road listed, no services....however, there is a free car park just around the corner at Parking Ville de Laon.

tne other entry is just a service point on the campsite mentioned, where you can make use of these for €2 (please note CC....) but any overnighting there will be on the campsite and the rates are listed, quite pricy...

id try the car park first....if it feels right it will be ok...if not, it's the street parking or to the campsite...

weve used loads of overnight parking, some little more than a car park, some just a car park.....Lidl, LeClerc, Intermarché etc....

in fact, might be worth checking out the supermarkets, rest assured, someone else will be there in a MH...

    Good luck...

edit....just did the 'supermarket Google on gmaps and there's about ten to choose from, Aldi, Carrefour are together in the SW of the town and looks fine to tuck yourself away......as I said, someone else will have been there first....snuggle up to someone already there...wink

The  municipal site in Laon is the fourth alternative in your original post:  > + Allée de La Chênaie, aire de services à 2 € (passage seul), dans le camping municipal de la Chênaie – T 0323202556 - ouvert du 1/5 au 30/9. Nuitée camping CC et 2 pers 14€10 (hors 07 et 08) à 17€30 (en 07 et 08) en 2015 + électricité 3€90.Situé au bord d’un étang. GPS – Lat N 49°33’35’’ et long E 3°35’53’’. www.camping-laon.com – courriel > contact.camping.laon@gmail.com which has a specialist motorhome area.

My reply was to confirm that this is a safe place for motorhomes to stay (or was when we stayed there) and according to reviews is still being used for overnight stays.  Some municipal sites are available 24/24 - others have a barrier.  It was so long ago when we stayed there that I'm not sure what sort of arrangements were made out of hours.

During the ecliplse in 2000 we spent some time on a temporary site to the south of Laon, and I notice (after googling) that this is now a CenterParcs.

Laon is a small 'provincial' town and therefore as safe as anywhere in France.

I've used the municipal site many time, though not in the last 4 or 5 years - just not been in the area. I've always quite liked it.

The car park looks useful and less exposed than its nearest alternative. Thanks for this BoleroBoy!

    Thanks everyone for your help
