A good road map will show the all the car ferries across the river - you can zig zag and needn't stick just to one side.

The Rhine is lovely with many beautiful towns and villages.  Both sides of the river have their charm and there are sufficient bridges and ferries to cross over if required.

You should be aware that there are rail tracks both sides of the river and many freight trains pass through particularly at night.  We now tend to stick to the Moselle which is a lot more peaceful.

Unless I'm being stupid, I can't think why you'd travel down the Rhine valley to Provence! Despite the other replies, I think you'd be better traveling down the Rhone valley! Follow the signs to Lyon and then Valence, then Aix en Provence. Stay on the N7 or A7. That's the east side.

You know what they say, always read the question carefully before answering. This was one of those trick questions!
