Looking for a route to Sledmere House for the National this year. We are travelling from Kent. We’d prefer to travel late on Friday, staying at services overnight, and doing a short distance the next morning. Any suggestions ?

The services at Wetherby on the A1M have a very good caravan area. No idea if they allow overnight parking though. Perhaps there is some info online.

Edit looks like you can but costs £28.50

Wetherby Services are North of the turn off the A1 onto the A64, by quite a few miles. The only other services coming up from the South in that area are at Ferrybridge, and it's a rather confusing detour to get to them now using the M62. In truth they are not nice either, and will charge you same as Wetherby. Be aware that there are road works involving lane closures on the A64, which is always busy around York.

If you do use the A64, it might be worth investigating the Park and Ride venues for York, just off the A64 at Askham Bar and the one for the Designer Outlet. I know the Askham Bar one has dedicated MH parking. I will post a link shortly.

Edit: no overnight parking allowed at P&R, but it does mention a 24 hour car park on the Askham Bar webpage https://www.itravelyork.info/park-and-ride/park-and-ride-sites/askham-bar/

As TTDA says - forget Wetherby - it's too far out of your way.  Since I live about 20 minutes from Sledmere, I hope I can give you some local knowledge.

I am guessing you will probably be using the A1 - there is a service station at Blyth - near Bawtry / Doncaster but the HGV / caravan parking is relatively small and there is a charge of £25 for more than two hours parking.  Similarly, there is Doncaster North on the M18 and that is also small with the same charges.  We've only ever visited during the day with the van and each time have had to leave immediately because there was no room.

I would also be inclined to dismiss a lot of public car parks since, because of current problems with a certain sector of the 'community', many of them now have height restrictions, and even if they haven't, you're going to attract a lot of attention.  However, coming from Kent, you'll know all about that!

On the plus side - there are loads of small commercial sites and CLs in the area and I would have thought that a better option for a night's rest than motorway services.

My preferred route - and one I have driven many times with the van, would be A1, M18, M62, A63 to Humber Bridge roundabout and then Beverley - Driffield and onto the A166.  There is an alternative option via the A614 but I know that my preferred route makes for easy, stress-free towing.

Once on the A166, go through Garton on the Wolds and IGNORE the route to Sledmere (B1252) immediately after leaving Garton.  I travel that road three or four times a month (solo) and the road surface is diabolical!  (Look at Google Maps for an idea and that was two years ago).

Instead, continue on through Wetwang and just after leaving Wetwang, turn right towards Malton.  After a long straight, you come to a small roundabout at Fimber (by the picnic spot) - turn right onto the B1251 and continue on to Sledmere.  Even this road isn't the best in the world but it's better than the alternative.

Hope this helps - we will not be staying at Sledmere, but plan to go on the Sunday as a day visitor.

Yes I would agree, that is a route we often take when coming home across East Yorkshire from the South and East of the country. I would add that the York bypass and the A64 route can be very congested and is usually best avoided if possible....

    Too many flamin' holidaymakers. wink

Plus, the A64 takes you quite a long way out of your way and then you have the problem of negotiating Malton / Norton to approach Sledmere from the north - which with a caravan is certainly best avoided - especially at this time of the year! Malton is a traffic nightmare even without the van.

Agree with richardandros as we use this route although we do turn off at A614, Howden/Driffield. It's not the fastest route but more direct and perfectly easy towing. We haven't tried your route richardandros as we live nearer York. Hope you all enjoy the National.

There is a Caravan Club site at Bridlington which is about a half hour drive from the rally venue. A much nicer place to spend ones £25.

Choose a big Tesco Supermarket, maybe Lincoln or Barton on Humber,  e.mail the manager and ask if you can overnight in his car park after store closing time,  and whether he has a cafe serving early morning coffee and breakfast.

For me living close by, I would suggest coming of m62 at Howden,  to shiptonthorpe, there's a cl just up the road? Then continue from shiptonthorpe towards driffield, but going straight across the roundabout at Bainton to Wetwang then turn left in Wetwang,  but don't take the next right turn down side of chipshop,  unless you like a challenge! Take right turn just out of Wetwang to Sledmere, an easy run from motorway, there's a few laybys from shiptonthorpe to Bainton, but I wouldn't advise overnighting in them unless you like added company! Easiest place to stop is perhaps on m18 services

You talk about the A166 but I presume you mean the A164 ?

Sorry, onepjg - only just seen this and probably too late for a useful answer.  I did mean the A166 - that's the last part of the trip - the 166 goes from Driffield due west, through Wetwang and then you turn right just after leaving Wetwang.
