Leaving because unable to book

I didn’t realise that you’re an expert ln Westcountry Sites, JV. I can’t say I’ve noticed many Scots in these parts. Most of our emmets seem to come from the Home Counties or the Midlands.
(NB. 'Emmets' is used here as a term of endearment.)

Can someone clarify the difference between a 'grockle' and an 'emmett'?

I point out that on a peak bank holiday May weekend there are with bright sunshine there are more than 800 vacant pitches on Club sites in Devon and Cornwall right now, but you puzzle me by claiming we have to wait for Scots school holidays before visitors will.arrive ? The visitors are here in Devon and Cornwall now. The caravanners and motorhomers are here now. They just aren't using the Club sites.

It will almost certainly be different for the next BH which has a weeks school holiday attached. Not many folk are going to travel 300 miles, from this part of the world for a long weekend. Even from say the Bristol area it is a fair distance, given they can just nip into the Cotswolds.
As long as they booked well in advance of course. 😀
Cornwall is just not a let's just nip away (for three days) destination.
Scotland was mentioned as being far away and popular. Certainly is with me in May and I guess a fair few others, as the weather is often reasonable and there are none of those person eating midges.😂

JV, how can you possibly know what the site occupancy situation is throughout Devon and Cornwall? I don’t claim to know that and I live here.

“Cornwall is just not a let's just nip away (for three days) destination.”
Doesn’t that depend where you’re starting from?

Hi Tinny, Perhaps everyone from Bath, Bristol, Bridgwater, Taunton, Yeovil, Exeter and Plymouth has gone to the east coast !

Grockle is a West Country term for a tourist. Emmett is purely a Cornish term for a tourist. Both arrive in swarms at certain times of the year.
There's a rather amusing story about a local creating Porthemmett Beach to tease visitors!

Well, someone’s clogging up our roads down here and I can’t imagine they’re all Scots.

It does. However, for a three day break most folk don't want to travel that far. Cornwall has a large number of available sites / pitches but does not have that many huge cities in close proximity to provide the folk to fill them for a three day break.
Contrast that with sites around here, which have Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Sheffield, Leeds etc, all in close proximity.

There you go again “That far”. It depends on the starting point!
Look at the cities and towns Euro listed. There are more than you seem to realise but, thankfully, not on the scale of those you named. It can’t be bad here, then😀

Bath and Bristol are 120 miles from the start of Cornwall. So would be comparable to us going to Cirencester. We have lots of sites in the Peak District within 40 / 60 miles. Even somewhere like Sandringham is only 87 miles.
When we were working, Buxton at 42 miles was our site of choice for 3 nights. I am sure we are not alone in not wanting to travel over 100 miles for a three night break.

As you say TW, not on the scale.
Therefore the two areas are not really comparable when looking at short breaks, which is the point I was trying to make.
Its either that or the reason there are so many CAMC vacancies is they are just not popular, whilst the ones in this part of the world are. As some are always telling us that the sites are clones, I find that hard to believe.

I can call off the border guards, then!😋
Maybe you’ve got a point with the cheaper booze thing but they’d only need to go to Carlisle 😀

Steve, the two areas are far from comparable for numerous good reasons.
Bristol is about 150 miles from me and I don’t consider that an undue distance for a 3 day break. 40-60 miles is more like something I’d do for a day trip. 😀

At least the Bodmin Moor A30 bottle neck should be a thing of the past. It’ll have moved down to Carland Cross!

For us that's £68 of fuel on top of the site costs when towing, so a lot for 3 days. Now we are retired there is no point, we might as well go for longer. When we were working it would have needed a special reason, such as an event. As far as day trips are concerned 40 / 60 miles is fine solo. Also makes for a very relaxing break. Others may have different opinions but towing for me is a means to an end, not something I overly enjoy. So a 300 mile round trip OK for a week, but not for less.
We might feel different if we get a MH, we will have to see.
However, all the above is just me, but there must be a reason for all the spare pitches eurotraveller mentioned. If it's not down to sufficent folk not wanting to travel into the area for a three day holiday, why do you think it is? I seriously doubt availability will be as high Spring Bank Holiday week, or during the summer holidays.

"why do you think it is?"
I have no idea, Steve, other than I believe this area is not "that far" for many, and neither do I have any idea if the pitch availability is out of step with club sites in, say, Wales or East Anglia, or whether commercial sites are full or have plenty of space. By tradition, this bank hol tends not to be as popular as the next.

Not at all, JV. Like everywhere else there are peaks at rush hour but I can assure you that getting around here is a doddle compared to your area. Don’t believe all that your mates tell you. After all, they're mostly only here at busy times.
However, people are often surprised to find this isn’t the quiet backwater they expected.
Happy to enlighten you.

Oh, gee, Steve! Life’s too short.

Hey, I have over 60 pitches empty tonight! Looking at the booking history for my site, there has been a similar "trend" for the last 12 years. My 2 neighbouring sites are similar, it's a very different story come Whitsun when we are completely full and stay that way until mid September.
