New hard mattresses
We have just bought our first new caravan, a Bailey Unicorn Valencia, the caravan is great but I have talked to a few people and the mattress is too hard and to correct this they buy a topper, why, its brand new, written to Baileys so called customer service and they say there is no fault but personnel preference, this is the case for most caravans would like any advice etc.

Presently staying at Glenearly site near Dalbeattie? £100 for 5 nights with good wifi included. Arrived around 11.30 after an easy drive from Meathop Fell. Relaxed after a lght lunch, had a nose around Dalbeattie and then off to RSPB at Mersehead.
Scottish air got me in the evening. I was asleep by 7.30 I guess. Woke at 11pm. In bed asleep by 11.30 and slept until 6.30

Very much a personal choice. We have a mattress in the spare room that I think is terrible. However others that have stayed over have commented on how comfortable it is whilst for me it is far too soft.
When OH first stayed over she slept in my double and I slept in my ,then, study. I would not share a bed as it was the first time my 16 year old had met Fliss and I did not want her thinking that she could bring a fella home to share her bed anytime that she wanted as that would have been double standards.
When Fliss flopped onto the bed she said it was that firm it winded her!

The bed mattress's in our new Hymer suit us both but may not suit others. The seating for a 33 grand caravan is by far the worst we've had in 13 new 'vans. We were so disapointed we took it to Tockfield and had the filling replaced with firmer bases.
Happy caravanning.

Bedding is certainly a personal preference, hence the soft/hard mattresses sold in bed shops.
My OH has suffered with minor back ache for years but we had two weeks in a hotel in the Fuerventura where a lot of the reviews said the beds were very hard, however she had two weeks of perfect ache free sleep. When we came home we bought the hardest mattress we could find and the aches have vanished.

I don't know if Bailey use a standard mattress across their products but we have one of their motorhomes and the mattress is considerably softer than the Ortho mattress we have at home. It is also a bit softer than the previous Swift caravan mattress. Personally I would give it a bit of time as its possible that you will get used to it and it may soften a bit in time. If after a few months you still find it too had you could then consider a topper.

mattresses can be 'soft' or 'hard' or anywhere in between...the important thing (especially for those that need it) is that the mattress gives full support in the right places.
its no different with seating, which is why I much prefer a fully supportive and adjustable cab seat to a typical low backed, squishy 'side sofa'.
support, like many other fundamentals, needs to be part of the inherent design, built in from the start...
im sure our two (double) mattresses would appear far slimmer than some of the 'sprung' types in other vans, but the multi zone, cold foam construction (resting on their own sprung slat system) supports fully in all the right places....we certainly love them....
i guess Duvalays and toppers are an attempt to provide this sort of comfort on top of a mattress that doesn't have it built in from the start.

We bought a Duvalay topper for our Valencia which they make to measure. Be aware that the bed hydraulic struts will probably not be adequate if you fit a topper due to the extra weight. We used a broom handle as a prop to hold the bed up if we were packing items underneath.
