Spain, caravan marker boards
Hello, some advice please.
Off to Spain in a few weeks time, have read the advice on marker boards for units over 12 meters, which ours is, (with car). We have a cycle rack on the rear of our Swift, do the marker boards have to be attached to the caravan, or as the cycle rack would be the furthest point on the caravan can one long board be attached to it, (along with the red and white marker board) or as stated by some, two smaller boards attached to the grab handles on the rear. Is this rule strictly enforced, or is it, as long they are on the caravan we’ll be ok. Any advice, thoughts please. Thank you.

I believe that the Spanish authorities insist on aluminium panels not plastic. The problem for you is that the Fiamma panel is to warn of an overhanging item rather than to indicate that the unit is over 12 meters long. I use a single aluminium panel suspended between the two rear grab handles, this has worked for several years now since the ruling was brought in. You may need both indicators as the Fiamma panel does not meet the requirement for a long vehicle indicator ie yellow with a red border.

The regulation requires you to "permanently fix" aluminium marker boards to the rear of the caravan within specific height and width parameters. I do not see fixing to anything other than the bodywork as complying. They are easy to stick on with double sided tape.

I think Landyrover is right. The Club guidance note for outfits over 12 meters is >here< but you have a bicycle rack attached to the rear so I think you must also display the Fiamma warning board but it is only Italy that insists that this is made of aluminium. You can use a plastic one in Spain and I did so for many years.

What I've been unable to work out is how they can tell what it's made of without a very close inspection.

I guess they can't CY. I have also used a plastic one in Italy, ignorance is bliss on occasions. I now have a aluminium one. I have also accidentally left my driving licence behind. instant on the spot fine if caught out and heven knows what else.

Hi DD hope it's the Fiamma warning board you are talking about. My Aluminium marker boards 2 ( could have gone for the Single plate but didn't fancy the Postman trying to push that through the letterbox) Will be fastened to a length of copper tube (painted white) and strapped between the rear grab handles. Didn't fancy sticking to the van wall easier to remove when back in U.K.
