That's a worry David. I am due to be driving back north through Madrid to Bilbao on Tuesday and wasn't aware of any problems. I came down a few weeks ago and the temperature around Madrid dropped to -3 but the roads were perfect all the way from Santander even though there was snow on the side for a lot of the journey.

Last April I stopped for one night at a site in Plentzia which is about 40 minutes NE of Bilbao. Nice quiet site with a pleasant off-road walk down to the beach. We didn't use the facilities on site but there was a little bar/restaurant on site.

I hope the weather improves for both of us !

    Gerry

We traveled up from Burgos to Bilbao on Monday.  Heavy wet snow and poor vis on the stretch from Burgos to the junction AP-1 with AP-68.  Traffic mostly staying in single lane at around 80kph. Snowplows were ready in laybays.

Others at Bilbao who had come from Zaragosa direction on AP-68 had simply had heavy rain.

Forecast was for worse mid-week.   And yes, it was COLD at night at La Cabrera! (only 2 vans staying).

You must be on the Baie de Seine as that is what I am going home on Weds afternoon. Wave when you leave on your way off. I found this website - myweather2.com - which will show a marine forecast for Bay of Biscay. I found on the way out that the wave height was about 4m and the swell period was about 17secs and the crossing was very smooth. I am guessing that the higher the wave and lower the period creates an unpleasant crossing.

The AP-68, as a toll motorway, has many pleasant simple 'picnic' stopping areas.  AFAIK, there is nothing to say you cannot stop there as long as you like.  Trucks often stop for a few minutes break, and I would have little concern stopping overnight if necessary.

Found this a bit late for you guys so hope you got back OK but for anyone else there is a lovely free parking facility next to the elephant enclosure at a zoo about 5 miles inland from Santander. Its at Nature Park, Cabarceno N43degrees.21.486 mins W003degrees.49.186 mins

Last November there was  a baby elephant to watch....free!

Photo taken 100 yards from the site.
