Addendum: The website takes a bit of a time to learn how to use it but is fairly accurate. I have used the route planner and when you click onto a garage symbol and then on the ‘details’ you will see underneath the main title ‘Safefill approved refill Centre ‘ or whatever it is. Hopefully, all Morrison’s Fuel stations will have that printed on their sites soon!!

Oneputt, did you have any problems from the garage in allowing you to fill the safe fill bottle? Thinking about this system, mainly for longer stays abroad where the price of using electric is separate from the site fee. How easy is the operation? Thanks in advance.

2 weeks go I went to my not so local garage at South Anston to refill my Safefill but they had no gas that wasn’t a massive problem as I have the  large bottle, while away I looked at the Safefill site and found that Ebro Leisure on the A64 were down as a place for refilling. I rang them rather than just dropping in and spoke to 2 people the last 1 telling me they only had 1 left in stock but didn’t do refills, so having noticed that there is a Londis BP site in front of Ebor I rang them only to be given a massive NO to refilling so my question is how often do Safefill check their info.

No problem WN, I did ring round a couple of garages with no success  before calling  the Shell garage.  Guy there said no problem.  Turned up, followed the instructions on the pump with no problem.  Was in and out within a few minutes.

Thanks for replies. Is there a shortage of gas at the moment?

Interesting to read of filling SFs abroad. Anyone else encountered this problem?

Merve, do you have inside knowledge of a huge shift in Morrison's policy?

Last I heard they had introduced a policy of refusing to fill ANY refillable LPG system including those fully fitted to Motorhomes/Caravans.

It appears that systems like Gaslow & Gas It are to be refused as well as Safefill.

I do hope I heard wrong & somebody can enlighten me as to the current situation.

Sorry if this has been asked before. How does lpg react in cold/heat? Comparisons to propane/butane would help.

    No problem.

To the best of my knowledge its a mix of propane & butane.

I stand to be corrected by those with more technical knowledge of the mix.

     Thanks DD, very interesting.

Can you just take a refillable to any station abroad or does it vary from country to country?

Yes, I got 2 adaptors, didn't bother with the Spanish one as no plans to go there.

I think I know more than most. All I can say at the moment is that Safefill are working very hard to bring Safefill into the ‘mainstream ‘ Let’s put it this way, I am confident that Safefill will emerge a main player together with other refillable systems in the next year or two. One has to understand that the history of the LPG cylinder has not been covered in glory due to idiots refilling cylinders that were never made for refilling! When a gas cylinder (Calor) is spinning around on a garage forecourt and causes the garage to close operations- that sort of thing is massively damaging to us, the genuine leisure user who have bought their refillable cylinders in good faith and fill them correctly. Add to that that large businesses take forever to check things out where safety is concerned (after all it is their business) and we have a blockage in the system. Don’t forget that with Coshh, risk assessment, method statements, blocking tactics  and goodness knows what else, it all takes time. Never mind that Safefill have been and done all this work - these businesses want to do their own and I can understand that for the reasons I gave above. I am entering my 5th year with Safefill and I am more confident than ever that the market will open up and refilling will become far easier. On the comment regarding Safefill and the database- again, I would advise people to use MyLPG.eu as indeed Safefill does-  When you look up a refill point be it a service station or whatever. It will tell you whether it’s a Safefill friendly site under the title. Over and above that, there is a facility on there for us to ‘confirm’ the station. In other words we can inform each other- ‘yes, this station exists and it’s this price as I went there yesterday ‘ I think that is really useful- we can help one another. So, for me, the future for Safefill is bright - a good product can’t be killed- demand will keep it alive. Hope this helps.

I would happily use Safefill, and would happily pay the setup costs, however...... until Safefill is available in several confirmed places in my area, I shan’t be changing over. Personally I have no real confidence in their long term future at this point, and to part with the money until I’m convinced would be mad

One could easily believe there to be a vested interest in the former, DD.

I'm like Oneputt, I invested in the safefill cylinder and have no experience of the other systems, although I do understand others are available but I chose not to purchase them for a couple of reasons.  The gaslow refillable as far as I could tell wasn't lightweight.  The gaslight cylinder appears identical to that from Safefill but it doesn't appear to be very well supported, indeed I found it difficult to even locate at first on the internet.

I'm happy with the choice I've made, I do recommend them to others and I've been very happy when I recently required assistance from them and received phone calls as promised from their Director.

DD, I was asked a specific question about Safefill and I have answered it. I also, you will note, mentioned other systems. This thread is about refillable gas systems. I just happen to have Safefill which is all I can talk about with any knowledge. Gaslow, Gas it,  all have their place in the rich fabric of caravanning and Motorhoming. 😂😂

Perhaps also worth mentioning that caravanners are likely to be attracted to Safefill because the cylinders are light weight whereas systems such as Gaslow are heavy in comparison? This probably means that they will be discussed more depending of the ebb and flow of the discussion.

Overall, on this thread, I would surmise that all the systems have had pretty equal coverage. Generally speaking, I would imagine caravaners would go for a light, portable system whilst motorhomers are less concerned with either weight or portability.

If you look at the second post (mine) you will see that I mentioned (in no particular order)

    • Gaslow
    • Gas It
    • Safefill
    • Alugas

These are all "Refillable Gas Systems" or as you like to say "Direct Fill Cylinders"

CY I think has summed it up nicely, caravan owners would probably prefer a light weight, refillable bottle (correct me if I am wrong but that is only Safefill at this point in time?) as every saved kilo helps!

Motorhome owners can choose that system or any of the other slightly heavier portable bottle or one of the "fixed" installations from that list as they generally have more "spare" weight to play with.

    Advertising? I don’t think so?

While we are talking about refillable LPG, don’t forget Andy’s Gas (J17 M4 )

very useful if you passing that way ... 42p Ltr wink

Another correction. Andy's Gas is off J17 of M5, just north of Bristol, not J17 M4, which will have you wandering aimlessly round Theale.

Well spotted CY, it is indeed J17 of the M5 and not the M4 as posted, thanks for pointing that out.

I really must proof check before hitting submit.
