We have a small motorhome and would like to go to the Ryine for a few days in late summer, We are in our early 70s and not travelled abroad for about 6 years, never been to Germany, so any help and advise would be great. We only want to stay for 7 days, near to the Rhyne and in easy reach of a town, dont want to be driving about when we get there, we like to cycle. So any info re. sites and routes etc. would be a great help.

Thank you

Brian & Sue

We have stayed at the site at Rudesheim a couple of times.  It’s a lovely town and within walking distance of the town, lovely walk along the river.  Lidl’s et el are about 300 yards from the site.  One trip we did was catch a train to Koblenz then a 4 hour boat trip back Rudesheim.

You need to be aware there are train tracks both sides of the river and due to the frequency of heavy goods trains, particularly at night, it can be noisy.

Out of preference now we  tend to stay on the Mosel

    hope this helps

The section of the Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen is peppered with camp sites and Stellplatz ( the German equivalent of the French Motorhome Aires) and in late summer (End August onwards) there will be no need to book sites ahead. There are cycle paths on either side of the river and numerous cross river ferries to allow you to make round trips. Along the Mosel there are regular local busses that will take you and your bike in any direction for you to cycle back. Both valleys are magical areas. There's also an excellent Stellplatz in Cologne on the banks of the Rhine that's perfect for walking or cycling into the city.

We stayed here some years ago http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/campingpark_sonneneck.htm It is right on the banks of the Rhine but it can be noisy because of the adjacent road and rail lines.

We much prefer the Mosel to the Rhine as we find it quieter (see Oneputts post) however you could decide to stay around Koblenz where the Rhine and Mosel meet and then travel out from there.

Haven't stayed on a site on the Rhine for over 30 years so wouldn't want to recommend a site sorry.

The River Neckar is also another river to explore, more like the Thames than the Rhine or Mosel.

It looks familiar, think we may have stayed there, is it near Heidelberg?

If it is the one I am thinking of, it must have the most expensive, metered, electricity in the whole of Germany!

We've stayed at the Rudesheim site and really enjoyed it - it's very good for cycling, plus lots of other things to do.  Yes, it can be a bit noisy (flights arriving in Frankfurt at crack of dawn go overhead).  Make sure you book ahead (through the club) as it's very popular even in the shoulder months.

Sorry there are not the usual amount of photos but I think I had a problem with my camera but only realised too late!!!

Just to try and get back to topic the Neckar joins the Rhine near Mannheim.

Interesting to hear the comments of Oneputt and Tammy re the Mosel

I booked onto a site at Burgen on the Mosel and left after three nights because of the noise on the road the river and the railway on the opposite bank. It was unfortunate because it was a wonderful area but alas me and noise at night don't mix

For anyone intending to visit Wiesbaden and Mainz, there's a riverside site at Mainz-Kostheim (Campingplatz Maaraue) which doesn't suffer from road and rail traffic noise and if you're lucky and get a pitch in the first row, you get a wonderful panoramic view of the city of Mainz across the river from the comfort of your lounge.

The problem is that both the Rhine and Mosel are in part in steep valleys so the roads and rail have been built within the narrow strip of land between the river and the rise of the valley sides which causes an echo effect. If there is a secret it is to find a site where the valley widens out a bit. That is the case with the site at Rudesheim and probably the case for the site that Lutz mentions?

Campsite at Burg Lahneck on a hilltop is away from the noisy traffic and has great views over the Rhine, but I won't recommend it to Motorhome owners who rely on buses or bikes for transport.

Stayed twice at Zell am Moselle, lovely campsite in a great area.  No road noise 10 minutes walk to town.  Stelplatz just outside camp gates. Boat trips from town.  Not that much river traffic. Lots of shops and restaurants also a massive Globus hypermarket.  Highly recommend

Likewise Tammygirl.  We like the Mosel and have often stayed at Camping Burgen (at Burgen... sometimes spelt Bergen) between Koblenz and Cochem.  There is 'railway noise', but we didn't find it too bad.  If you are there the last weekend of August, you could visit the Cochem Weinfest with firework display on the Sunday night.  The Mosel is great for cycling - so many cyclists about.

If you decide on Moselle instead I got some useful tips about a month ago on this thread
